Dr. Lusher helps us revisit this important conversation as a community of learners. This video was recorded from the session presented to the community in cooperation with the Grandview Public Library on October 22nd.

hear the timing of this I feel like his is could be better and cousin having this conversation cuz as you know her on the precipice of report cards were on the precipice of parent-teacher conferences and it was just setback we talked about face reading practice is not how we grew up so this was foreign territory and if you are than you know and Olentangy or New Albany a Worthington Hilliard hopefully to provide Clarity consistency better information to our students and information for parents on how we can support the learning of our heads so are you confused it's okay music use my to continue to revisit this conversation with her because when you don't have time to dial off and really dig into that consistency or what we call inter-rater reliability of what I'm using is that and what Janice for an alignment we're missing the mark and we have a flawed model in process so our primary focus and answer these two essential questions what are standard based grades and why do we support  okay so when we think about that transition again I'm not telling you anything kids are way more than a dog, we know that but we know I can't we know that integrity that is definitely one basically what we're teaching and then how they're mastering that  we don't dilute it but things like comparing to the population of other learner Stewie that's not what you're going to agree  how including our district so that's why it's important to revisit this discussion because I would say it's like the game of telephone that you played in your little you don't know how far you're getting accountable with teachers at had that old mindset of they didn't do anything so I'm giving him a zero why would you let that be a gap in their learning give him an incomplete and let's have them come in and let's do the work and see where they are and then determine how I supported help that okay but this one hello right now he's ready he's hanging on by I don't know till this semester is over it's all or nothing we know that we know that this is not an effective model now that being said even if we talked about standards-based says only two grades in a great book and you have all these formative it's still feels like the semester killer recitation of whether it is you know day today for minutes and a project for portfolio some way to get information you don't have all that information about that student you can't have just one or two pieces of information because it feels very much like this semester killer the midterm in the final a shirt with Mark and Eileen a story that I'm not very proud of most students would share this with you there have a really really risk High School pathway you take AP classes some of your generals your first year of college or life I know this like why am I it's my freshman year was in a marine biology class when you gone to places like Andros Island like you can teach the class I showed up for like the midterm in the file that the 40 year old would be like 12 that class get something of Interest learn something new but even the kids that get it or getting nothing out of this because they're playing a game in their cramming those two data points are supported by every bit of that form of that information your games rough and you know exactly  select shop what about some toxic practices are great views we talked about zeros and learn to talk about the master killer talk about the bell curve we talked about Appliance pieces in there so you out of all the points and then we give you an average okay what's wrong with that the median and the mode set the most statistically accurate one for looking at the central think central tendency of all that data although ordinal numbers all those greats the most accurate one the one actually use is the median and not the me and I'm going to show you what to say plates to use the media  so use me  how do I show me when you give me an example so if you're going to calculate I was going to have you do it do what you hear me do you mind if me so can you just take all those grades and let them together basically get an average writing me to synonymous for average right so in this scenario this student has three days to see if you ask her when you have percentages because you have to be like a 30% Hershey versus like the 92 this scenario when you do this when you average out the mean she's getting a c  but when I look at the set of as a whole when I calculate the median so we're here that 3 on this side 3 on this side of a look at the average of the venous air right if you have have an odd set of data do you have to look at the average you would still be a be right  so that would be her great that's a small but they k sing about the outlier peace and you really well when we try to increase the rigor they don't have resiliency they freak out when they get it because they've always been a hundred you know it's so those are the kinds of conversations  so the big house building they were like 6th grade we have you know I can parents love it too because grades made sense they're like oh yay no more there and continue on but in our hearts as Educators really, it's you know we now and turn right so what we done with 6th grade as we have a line the learning standards on the report card to the curriculum really enhance learning attributes or also adding an ancillary piece that's called a grade equivalency it won't count but Sam will be able to see that if we average play this is what he would have to help transition because in 7th grade cats us I mean truly so we got in the room and have those discussions and really care about some more precise language we tried to be very explicit so when you look at a certain that's extending the standard or going Beyond we really try to honor what we want to see in terms of the gradual release of responsibility of our instruction go to the classrooms of learning spaces are makerspaces unlike who's doing the car that heavy lifting I'm doing it now but I will be at relation responsibility to some point to be doing some of that heavy lift you should see that any Sanders and this is really miss the mark of reaching her highest flying kids cuz they get suffocated cuz we never let go but we never say Hey you send it I was think about is my dinosaur kid everything about dinosaur things and looking at the same criteria because if that's a sauce perseverance and they're not turning in their work and they're getting zeros we should be gathering evidence and instructing the exact same way through exposures and some instructional support I would say this we talked about that release responsibility I do we do you do we're still at we do we haven't been able to really let go so we got to out something and I get really good information and questions for parents so he said to me you know understand the difference between and the teachers me and my kids are doing great but I just wanted to work and so I gave her a story bring it back to being a mom so I have a son who is probably a 4-3 in Reading so what heaven is like you know who is doing the heavy lifting with him I get it I know it and so that's a bit of a shift and that's going to have to be some conversation we had is a bad thing it just means that now with more information be able to bust open what English language arts is and look specifically at informational text and reading and writing the language you're going to get more descriptive information about how the students are truly  so it was funny because the mom telling was white when I said I hope he gets it too who are you and why are you leaving or stupid like I know what he's doing support peace Peter one of the things that we need to think about it we respond as a school bus school to how child should you how should you progressing when a child has unique needs either academically emotionally  we need to be thinking about that support giving every child what they need and so one of these talks about is it you know a lot of times you'll see her for Christmas permit are not needing the mark that feels like to me we're just rehearsing meal. Casa Park  just put the ownership back on us that we need to be providing support in a way that helps that student still May 4th towards that standard and that was really important in our which is really felt strongly about that because we are a couple things precise language to give good information that was aligned to the standards tell her parents understand exactly what they were doing with an ultimately to make sure that we had a Nexus between all the things that we teach and where we want us to just be in the end. any questions on that the four three two or one that will be the language that used k-6 so and that will be an insert in your report card what you're saying so there's computer so Sam doesn't turn in his homework but he does great in class like he's going to get to I don't know how cheaper show you the next part that's right what their learning and this is where your kid likes and who probably you know gets A's on all this test matches the condoms are going to get free but then we good pants and some of those compliance pieces but it's you know but that's again we have to own the instruction of that that's Wellness that's a soft variable what about that we can come back to any of this but the learning attributes these are derived from our 21st century learning skills girls that get you promoted  French emanated. stupid and as I said earlier you know I'm taking a risk screening what is not the only word in that and that situation you know it's it's it's beyond that so we really like that's an important piece part of this will help kids that the quality of those resources can be appropriate for their needs where can I really work together on that to do sub with only that that's important also for self that you know this is something that needs discussion every year and we need to continue to to be keeping those is open for communication with her her parents are teachers that then ultimately I think she your planner students so they look familiar to you it really gives you a more verbose version of the conversation that I've had in more spirited wait here with the research base grades play consistent in the line with a cricket and then the evidence that this is the same to let me give you a scenario that you might have a son is in first grade and first grade teachers may say you know we never give for Star kids just too cheap and raise levels together sixth grade and everybody gets forced because they're all doing well because we don't have consistency of the criteria that we use to determine what goes into those crates the other thing is that what time is dinner I said when I looked at the report cards they were different and every relevel a different learning targets you know have any way to determine then if your aligned is just classic Joe's great has this and Melissa's great has this and there's no lights there's no consistency which means that it's really like it's every year you're Reinventing the wheel information of Penny presenting to parents not articulated inconsistent convention because there's not consistency of language across the grade levels so and again our teachers want to be here but they had to have the time to have a conversation to be honest you going to courage to discuss this stuff because it's really personal and if you don't know what you're doing you're just Reinventing an old model and I'm not saying that that happened but we we we go Lots change and Alignment conversation needed to take place and we had to get people in the room to have it so that's a great question that you asked so now we don't working towards that consistency similar criteria so that each ear you can look at that information and get a sense of how your child's doing so I'll be able to look at Braddock and fourth grade let's see how your writings doing this year you're free now let's see how you're doing now now that the elevation of what's expected in fourth grade and see how you're responding and if you haven't proven or you are progressing a little bit more about how teachers are trained in using the standards because the downside potentially is it it's the pain situation but now it's what teacher you have determined gear for 302 exactly about that and let them sit down and make the discussion something like the learning attributes are done in collaboration they'll also bring to the table that interrater reliability wear if I'm not real sure I'm going to say hey let's talk about this because I am not sure that this is a two or three and let me let me talk to you about this what we said about and responsibilities who's doing the heavy lifting are you able to stop and let that child independently consistently do that work in are they achieving the standard when we have those discussions you're going to see consistency move away from that Greek food where are the extra credit for the next but you didn't so you get the what piece of it's really important to your phone need to continue that discussion and make sure that the evidence is the same that were utilizing that consistently across every grade level and then we have to remember that they're going to generalize those skills and domains like algebra geometry number sense and so every gets killed providing should leave with the end in mind that it could be integrated in a much broader context the teacher that information and it says its job really good conversation where you're going to get a tease out so this is why that's their plan to they're going to be able to lead you to some more focus and precise areas where we can really support that learning as opposed to like that jumbled but I just got to see anything so should really help provide some more Clarion information
