Mrs. Pettit's Bio

The 2018-19 school year will be my 20th year of teaching.  I spent my first few years at RLS as a 3rd and 4th grade teacher. I taught a year of 7th grade Social Studies and then spent five years at 6th grade Math. This will be my 8th year teaching 5th grade Math. I am really not just saying this, but 5th graders are by far my favorite age to teach. They are independent, but still need you and enjoy your help. They are developing their own unique personalities, but are still willing to say they like their teachers. They still get excited by simple pleasures in life! Ahhhhh... to be 10!

I have two school age children of my own, so I know how busy life is! My son, Blake, is a Freshman and Hilliard Davidson High School and my daughter, Macy, is in 6th grade. We live in Hilliard, along with their dad, Craig, and our dog Scarlet.

I tell my students that my number one goal is to help them learn to enjoy math this year. It is my number one job that they learn and master the content. We will work to achieve these things in a variety of ways. We spend a lot of time talking about math, thinking, estimating, and problem solving. We do this both as a whole class, small groups or in partnerships during a time we call "menu." I think it is important for children to have a choice and voice in their learning and it is through menu time that they can explore and learn in their own ways (with structure, of course).

I truly appreciate all the help and support that I have always received from my parents here in Grandview. I expect this year will be yet another GREAT YEAR for me here at EILMS!
