On October 19th, 2016, Stevenson Elementary hosted their first Building Level Team Meeting. This video is a presentation that followed a building tour led by District administration and building staff.

Joe first all welcome and I didn't get a chance to introduce self get my name's Andy called but I have a good fortune and privilege of serving as your superintendent so this marks the second facility planning me Bob are processed facility planning meeting at Stevenson so I wanted to volume I also wanted to say that I myself have sat in several meetings in his room and I personally find these seeds a little uncomfortable to for a long. Of time so by all means if you need to stand up and walk around that is not considered rude in fact I would encourage you to do so so please make yourself at home if you need to stand up walk around by all means do the restrooms are right outside the store I think you know we have faded sitting in the gym if you need it so wanted to make sure I covered those X's and O's also in Fort Wayne IN first facility meeting so too is at the case and this facility meeting we are recording this and it will be posted to our facility planning website for all those that are interested or not able to make it to see we also recorded our tour so that you could observe it virtually I don't know it will come through in the same way shape or form I know that as far as I know smell is not part of the video taping and I had I had some interesting smells experience  also will you should have each of you I hope and opportunity to sign in and also include your email the reason that I think that's important is we send every single person and we had about 175 said our first facility planning meeting in hemale reminder of this need and so if some of you in particular who didn't attend the first helpful in facilitating and help coordinators meeting so thank you Haley I want to thank Jamie turn our culture singer here because they really stepped up in the last several days and are going to help me facilitate this process thank you to you guys are wonderful people and calling I'm blessed to work with you Portugal Stevenson for the tour and also helping coordinated range technology and everything you did a fabulous job with the Tory and you very well prepared and I yeah give her meme I think they just left only did it so jori lost George razor tell Jory is a high school student the Grandview and he volunteered to do the virtual tour and so thank you Jerry and I want to thank tray cook so tray course I know Naya Finestein is babysitting and of course I can't remember the other gentleman's name Mason's Kayla major so thank those two for volunteering to babysit I mentioned it will be mid videotaping so having said all that some of this is going to be review if you attended the last meeting and I'm going to try and get through a quick so I always like to start with the end in mind when it comes for today at the conclusion of the speed we're going to go till about 8:30 tonight at the conclusion of this meeting you walk away hopefully building understanding capacity as well as providing us feedback with the first thing honestly was the tour I hope that you found that helpful play pool so that we're all on a common ground of understanding of maybe seeing a takeaways maybe you did maybe you have some is a percolating in your in your mind hopefully that was I found it to be valuable myself are we here okay we're here because of deferred maintenance and capital Improvement the estimate assessment is conducted was in the neighborhood of 40 $4000000 district-wide I believe that figure for Stevenson is just about six million dollars it's an estimate but I believe to be reliable and valid and importantly I think we need to stay focused on why we're here the reason that we're here is we have age of magnetic Capital Improvement problem which means that every year we are able to do repairs and engaging fast and keep up with maintenance then gap for the money that we have coming in with respect to permanent Improvement fun and are deferred maintenance continues to so that's why we're here  that was a lot of what we spent last game talking about today we are going to shift and Piven and talk and trying to build selective understanding around Powell Form and Function in our school building to include, space as well as classrooms as well as media centers as well as Jim's can support the 20% room Century learn our parents and Community meetings as well as our staffing Chevelle  we're going to build understanding around the timeline and process again just revisit that understanding about space Form and Function and we're going to gather your perspective you're inside at the conclusion based on the tour and based on what Jamie and Mark present on with respect to 21st Century Learning spaces  I talk tell our annual permanent Improvement budget is around $540,000 a year and that is the money that we spend on technology Capital Improvements or maintenance last year for example at the end of the year we had a water border Frank water heater great I think it was $10,000 we had a roof that was leaking really really bad I think it was 140,000 and the third thing we had was we have one elevator in the high school and it was an inch and original elevator play broke and therefore the part that we needed is no longer manufactured that part had to be manufactured in that needed to be repaired immediately because Betty student in a wheelchair or on crutches could not access the second floor unless they were carried up the steps so that was an emergency those three examples at the end of the year were emergency Capital Improvement expenditures and prevented us from spending the planned money we had Legacy Capital group with you just as a factual indication of our current reality I mention to you that according to the comprehensive assessment turn on Stevenson the Deferred maintenance and capital approvement estimation estimation is over six million dollars District why it's over for 4 million that would be the cost of bring our facilities up to speed without having to spend annual funds on the fancy Capital prison the lady that through this process we choose not to do all of the things that were listed here by the way so their existing radian that's why we're here because it's process can be challenging because although I've only been you were superintendent for two years and three months is that there isn't going to be one planned and everybody agrees to I'm confident of that but I continually remind myself in advance of these meetings that this is the right thing to do this is the responsible thing to do ignore this reality the right thing to do and I know not where it will end up is to engage the community and an iterative collaborative transparent process  to do something to fix this problem and it again it could be anywhere from doing nothing too I don't know are you thinking important to mention eldo is not in this life we do have a debt ceiling of 52 million dollar by the way I share that with you not saying that what we're going to spend or what we should stand I'm sharing it with you that if we wanted to build just making this up for exam Arlington is proposing our neighboring Suburban district is proposing leveling the high school and building a new one I believe that their estimates are that's 130 $10 project just the high school so I sure that with you anecdotally to give you a sense of you know parked at ceilings 52 million dollar so we even if we wanted to you go crazy or I don't not suggesting that that say what anyone wants to do a picture someone in your the does we are going to be able to do Valium current room or less question she's our treasure CFL but that's a calculation based on the net worth of the community to that formula that basically analyzers given the community's wealth what is what they're willing to loan so dish State and that's it that's a superintendence not as relevant where are we in the facility planning process again it was done by Kevin Harrison's group was the comprehensive facility assessment all of that information by building and district is posted online and is very detailed kids very dense is very I think at informative you know Kevin believes that he is assessments or buying play accurate 2% I think they're pretty valid and accurate and again all that information was shared at the last meeting in great detail and is also on the facility website where we are now to the process to understand specific get back from community and begin to think about what could be and how they form and function and will lead us to an option for no face ocean of consideration so we conducted only one community-wide meeting in this is the first of the three building meetings we have had acid and Larson on Monday night play up the high school on Tuesday night of next week for living and final framework play any draft proposals based on the current timeline would be a recommendation to the board based on just like this where maybe we get it narrowed down to two options with some detailed cost projections and maybe I say too we started starting Phase 2 there are no drawings there are tell conceptual renderings I have no predisposed dispositions of what is going to happen I may have an opinion but and I'll share it does it mean I'll get my way that's my wife CommunityWide engagement schedule calendar that post it online I sure did that at the last meeting and pass it out to everyone in fact it was mailed in the community-wide newsletter is an answer as well notices did May the process will dictate the outcome the process will dictate the outcome I think importantly you know while I was spend some time just recently talking about Aladdin when we hope to make a cord recommendation the process will also dictate the timeline in other words if we get mired down and we can't get consensus and there's a problem then we can extend the timeline  so while we have a detail process in schedule and timeline that isn't to say that the timelines going to dictate the process and outcome the process will dictate the timeline also and if we need more time with it you don't win we can certainly go back to the task force before the community and feed someone flexible the timeline in the calendar that we have and by all accounts including feel strongly that we can meet the timeline in calendar that we have in front of it play doing nothing could be enough question Blitz online  so you don't answer face that timeline will be impacted by hbg so long as being part of this process potentially hiring okay John just down line is that we hired in collaboration with their facility task force hpg Kevin Harrison Consultants can kids and their company are the one that created the comprehensive facilities that's been for every inch every square foot of all of facilities we have parted ways with him we are going to engage the facility task force in fact the meeting one week from tonight with or outcome of that meeting would be too full design I haven't dressed yet but I plan to but in my mind what process should we to hire an architect or planner what is the timeline and how soon can we get that done any is that what I just outlined right minded for where we are now so I think the answer to your question is are you depends him are successful and that's where the facility task force thinks we should go and I have not had that's the goal of the meeting next week so please no receptive to the facility task force stops on this I have not made any decisions or independent of them so in deference to many of them play task force members that are here today that would be the goal and outcome of that meeting to determine process timeline I would my own judgement is John I'd like to see Sooners close to Laird go interview three finalists all three were good and so the two didn't get it I will propose to them is the kid could that in consideration I also I known Eric for exam old was involved heavily with OS I know Rick van deusen is a very established well respected architect it has great experience I don't feel is in the car watch your business so maybe maybe there's a lot of knowledge and expertise on that so maybe they have ideas that I haven't thought of but I'm optimistic that will be able to hire that in maintain our current next  I don't want first ball but I'm pretty optimistic he's PG's go from here no they were just planners they were in fact very intentional purposeful with separating that head end in some of the differences were related to scope sequence of what you're getting at with some other parts and pieces of the facility assessment ticular with you letting you feel but irregardless they was the planning to include all say the portion where there were going to be phases and options and renderings cost associated with that so again my judgment and I'll have in deference to the facility task force meeting next Wednesday I think we need to hire someone to do two community members of the facility task force Rick Van Dusen Scott hensington I don't penzing obviously we have a message was too because of the end of the day all the programming all the learning all the instruction that's really on our shoulders to support that with ended that's why we're the future but we also need to deal with them as they come in from put the real world from a world of technology and be able to teach them keep up with the speed of their learning and then we're going to talk about 21st century space so we'll get into these each in a little work out there okay so we talked about the four C's we all know that there are those soft skills that matter most of the skills and like that did you either fired or promoted right and they mad so we talked about before Caesar checking about communication collaboration critical thinking and creativity and we are talking about the teaching practices por roll has change dramatically I used to be the best home all dollars right not know not any longer right or kids can Google anything if they're curious about something that they can find it controlled variable case of communication what are we mean by communication course we all communicate we were all communicating when we were talking with each other when we came in will we are on the tour Indian Hindi was communicating with you put in a classroom setting what does communication mean you're for preparing students 21st Century wire so sharing of thoughts is very important instead of the teacher just delivering information in the children say okay I got it and then they're off and running show me some very important the kids are communicating with each experiences as children and I would like you to tell you to suspend but you know teaching and think again of how this applies to your children and the children who come into school navigate to 25 Pettit and I sat down with the kids we could have just said okay we need you to do this this in this we need you to go out and fix the Chromebooks menu play NeXT computers but we allow the students to find the problems in the high school as far as tech support because they're the ones that are the consumers and what state creatively came up with far exceeded but we could give them but it's also relevant to their lives not a project that we're just saying you know create something this impress we got you really is wrong with this I'd say it's taken on a life of its own does almost succeeded keep it up on herself  so do you think about things isn't District when we think about that that consistency and I continuity K12 every suit everyday to make sure that they have optimal experience as they Charter Nordegren what skills do they have in tap succeed academically but I worry about perseverance I worry about Chris I worry about the fact that a lot of our graduates choose colleges really close to home and I never leave the bubble of Grandview and I was really the world is that look like so we've had a lot of conversations and it started with basically looking at that portion of a graduate that than seeing how are we starting her door to kindergarten instructing her students and supporting those saw variables and how are we ensuring that we are getting in the oven Bill have interpersonal skills to be able to work in a team collectively so let's think about what strategies we can go so swear I can't we're taking that fence the next level and her go to our work in the just gives you some more background on the same 21st century what does that mean it's nebulous term well yeah we're going to walk through for that comparative analysis for you but again they're not competing interest rate many ways to depending on what you're teaching your what your end in mind is they're both extremely you just have to know what your intended out on this for the learning. first
