good afternoon thank you all for being here to celebrate the 100th commencement of the seniors of Grandview Heights High School you can applaud if you would all please rise I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America into the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all thank you chain reaction 2015 all my goodness I'm sending you where is Lincoln class of 1935 my name is Bob men's hair implants 1935 play play yard 135 lb when is the member High School virginity we're in the house and everything what beers in Grandview where is half is mine  I wish you every bit of there like in the future okay students please be seated how about to pass you from that 1935 grab Bob Metcalfe welcome my name is Ken Chafin and I am honored to serve is principal of Grandview Heights High School on behalf of the Grandview Heights Board of Education superintendent Andy called and the faculty staff and students are Grandview Heights High School my honor and privilege to welcome you to the 100 commencement ceremony in the history of the school I would also like to add this is the very first ceremony that's going to be held outside so why not on number 100 right  the investment did so many in this audience have have made to help our students get to wear yard today today is one reason why this is special today is also special because of the communities of Grandview Heights and marble Cliff that have taken such pride in investment in the graduates of Grandview Heights High School for the last century  finally the 79 students who are seeking pull up Lamas today they are special before we move forward in today's ceremony I would like to take a moment to thank some very important people who have supported our students in the development of the ceremony along the way first the 100 commencement committee we began planning for today 546 days ago on November 25th 2013 in our committee included both mayors of Grandview Heights and marble Cliff school board members Administration teachers parents and most importantly stood your tireless efforts in Your Vision are so appreciated  our senior class advisor Kevin Richards who is asked by the sea class to be the guest speaker Baccalaureate last night I believe he deserves special mention no matter what if we have an idea that we think of you meaning for impactful to our I know we have a teammate who will work with us day and night to make sure that happens for kids today is but one example thank you so much Kevin rich I would also like to take a moment to good knives are commencement speaker president coach Jim Tressel I asked her Tressel earlier if he knew the significance of 31 to 24 on the scoreboard and he said that he did I'm for those you there turn on the 2002 for National Championship that was the final score so before I don't have to say it coach but this is Buckeye country thank you for the memories and thank you for being a part of such a special day for us CAC the families of our students at Partners supported soccer best and invested on incredibly high levels for our students to have the education and opportunities that they have had you would need to go a long way to find more invested families also it would I would be remiss not to mention the entire K-12 faculty and staff for the Grandview Heights School District you will have an immortality event on our students and you have supported and guided them to where they are today I would like to ask the class of 2015 to stand up and give a round of applause to not all your parents and your families but also our staff here in in Grandview Heights thank you as noted in your program we have 31 students it will be a where did an honors diploma 27 who have been inducted into National Honor Society I would now like all of those students graduating with honors or who are National Honor Society please stand and be recognized as I reflect back on the Journey of the class of 2015 it is clear we have much to celebrate academically this class has distinguished itself 14 students will graduate with a GPA of 4.0 or higher we are graduating for students recognized by National Merit graduates will be attending college is as far north as Champlin College in Vermont as far south is Georgia Tech as far east as Boston University and as far west as Arizona State University in all are cumulus ship offerings well exceed six million dollars are accepted scholarship offers total 1834800 $70 that's impressive we are equally proud of our students who have built their skills and capabilities to the point where they are ready graduate to the workforce and or specialty training immediately in the same way that colleges and universities need are college-bound students the workforce will immediately from our graduates  I also think it important to reference the fact that Grandview Heights city school district has been recognized as the highest achieving School District Central Ohio the past two years this senior class contributed that achievement as well athletically the class of 2015 very likely maybe the most decorating accomplish class that we have ever had visually this class was represented by 15 first-team all-league selections by the MSL are cross-country team had two senior Runners who competed in the state meet our girls soccer want a regular-season MSL title and finished runner-up in the district finals are football team made it to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 1987 who is basketball team 118 regular season games are girls swimming team won a sectional title and sent of relay team team to State seven seniors on our boys and girls track teams qualified for regionals and will compete next week  last but not least how about the boys soccer program who won how about the boys soccer program who won MSL District Regional championships in became the first team in the history of Grandview Heights Athletics to play for a state championship it goes without saying but you captured the hearts this community and but one example is the amount of short or support showing at the largest tailgate history of Grandview was up on the on the Jumbotron we had Grandview Bobcats as far as the eye can see other important highlights are certainly the 11th straight Superior rating at omea for Grandview singers and first robotics team qualifying for the world championships in St Louis again the class of 2015 has given us much to celebrate  I sat with a teacher on Friday I respect very much and her words put it best as we both fought back tears watching the senior video she said Ken  we are the people in the world to have these kids and I couldn't agree more  my only personal regret is not being here the first day you walk through the doors as freshman and you know I would have greeted you with a fist bump when I think about what defines the class of 2015 my mind immediately drifts away from things like scholarship Athletics or academic achievement I think of two words love and Leadership your Journey's been difficult at times but love has led you to lead  love has helped you grow as people difficult times have been challenging and hard but they are your journey as well they are why you are who you are today was not fortunate enough to get to know him I enjoy hearing stories about classmate Ian Lynch and how his Spirit Still Remains with our students the cheetah strong tribute state championship tailgate evidence is that fact nobody asked you you let out of love none of us will ever forget the love ball for Hall that raise thousands of dollars cover the medical expenses of our beloved calculus teacher mr. Steve Hall I've included a picture that I had to prove a Jif taking and texting to him that night the dance a candlelight vigil and a celebration of life are all examples of the way that you let out of love again nobody asked you I would now like you're a punk  the author did not know it at the time but I know it was written for you  if you love something love it completely cherish say it but most importantly show it  life is finite and fragile and just be something is there one day it might not be the next never take that for granted say what you need to say and say a little more say too much show too much love too much everything is temporary but love and love outlives us all I'm sitting here laugh and I'm going to go off the script here because they are so unique I mean they really truly are when you think about that total package of kids and how they've achieved academically athletically their ethic cheering  most principals you stand up here and they talk about the things that we hope we instilled in them and quite honestly I'm in this is a tribute to all the families they hit the door with the values the characteristics that we really want from them and that's a huge tribute to you your journey here has been impressive but I want to challenge each and every one of you to stretch yourselves and continue to Lead Out of Love  you are town an equally compassionate when you have a burning desire in your heart that something needs to happen do not back down  listen to it that fire is almost never wrong on behalf of the faculty and staff of Grandview Heights High School it is my privilege to say we love and I am not embarrassed to say that you are exactly the class that should be the 100 graduating class this high school and you are here for a reason honor the 9185 graduates who came before you and the thousands who will have that come after you by continuing to be exactly who you are but this will always be your home once a bobcat always a bobcat I would now like to welcome Erica Phillips to the stage who is or alumni speaker this evening from the class of 2005 let's see if the wind stays down right so what do I remember from Grandview I really had to think about it and what came to mind is I remember sitting in that Auditorium 10 years ago and thinking I am so ready get out of here  and why is this gown making me so sweaty and yet here I am back having left and never really letting Grandview leave me I am part of this community and you all are too mostly I remember those three minutes between the community space is making lunch plans before cell phones floors then waiting impatiently for 11:37 to arrive getting a from tackling my locker because it was stuck yet again actively avoiding all the couples canoodling in the Halls sure I learned a few sings from mr. Richards mostly how to lose graciously Euchre go Algebra 2 wasn't half-bad and thanks to mr. hedge and French one I still use phrase suku I treasure the learning Grandview gave me but what I really built a Grand View was a community life happened that was for halls over there and what you made me noticing isn't everything on describing still exemplifies High School in Grandview yes things change men's soccer made it to state championships you know vote on homecoming King but in many ways they stay the same like the thousands of us who've been to camp ODI Latin Camp Ohio  and looking back I realize the Grandview was about Connections and Community whether it's a trivia night or wallet I'm out for a walk I run into classmates and I love it or when I find a new friend and figure out that we have some kind of Grandview connection it's we're cool  these connections when it happened for me without this high school so while you might be like me and want to get out of here as soon walk across the stage note Grandview will keep a little piece of you and you will keep a little piece of it congratulations class of 2015 good afternoon is my pleasure to introduce to you the members of the Grandview Heights City Schools Board of Education mr. Grant Douglas mrs. Stephanie Evans mr. Adam Miller vice president mr. Jesse Truett and president mrs. Debbie Brandon thank you Jack  I would now like to welcome superintendent and Eco up to the podium please join me in honoring a man who is we made a positive impact on this district with his heart and his vision good afternoon graduates and families on behalf of the staff of our school district in Grandview Heights Board of Education I welcome each do you to the 2015 100th year commencement ceremony what a wonderful graduating class of individuals coming together to form glass of graduates that truly embodies what it means to be a part of something bigger than yourself it has been a distinct honor and privilege serve each of you as your superintendent for the past year and what a year it has been a graduating class that achieved academic excellence in the classroom as evidence by both the elite universities and colleges that they have been accepted but also the scholarship dollars that they have been awarded has mr. Chaffin said awarded over six million dollars of scholarship State final soccer game that took the entire community on an unparalleled Journey that none of us will ever forget a football team that was unequaled in their success Friday Night Football games with most every unit on the field in some capacity or another a band that is the best darn band in the land a first robotics team that competed proudly in the world competition simulating real life environments that are uniquely run by the students not our coaches musicals and plays that we're all inspiring emotionally Beijing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and of course it's a wonderful life this graduating class has so watch to celebrate and be grateful Behind These successes are the people that love and support you most your parents I want to take a moment and talk what the role of parents and in fact that you are never nor will you ever be too old to make them proud what I was fortunate enough to have can officially Award of the job of superintendent of Grandview Heights I received many congratulations from family friends and colleagues alike there was one call however that has stuck with me even to this day above all of the rest the call was short and sweet and from someone that I have the utmost respect for went something like this  congratulations Andy on earning the job of superintendent in Grandview you should be very proud of yourself  now then what's your parents phone number  I want to call them and congratulate them because in fact they also have been apart of your success now what's their number  each of you should be very proud of your accomplishments thus far and will most certainly be proud of the amenity accomplished she will continue to achieve throughout your life each of you have infinite potential and very Bright Futures however remember this you can never think your parents and for the countless hours days months and years that they have given in building the foundation on which each of your successes are and will be built remember to thank them and remember to thank them often graduate so it down like to take a moment to talk about the Bordine's of character of grit and being a part of something bigger than yourself and the importance of deep Earnest genuine caring nature wow we have so much to celebrate today this graduating class has faced much sorrow this school year and in years past one of your classmates that would have been graduating with you today Ian Lynch passed away so tragically in a fatal accident  this year the passing of beloved math teacher and friend Steve Hall and even more recently the loss of one of our 2013 graduates Chase gauge many believe that in times of Challenge and sorrow that character is built while this may be true I believe that more than you're being built in times of trouble and sorrow character is actually revealed  what did revealed of this community this school district of this graduating class is something to be remembered treasured and should serve each of you as a model about the portance an impact that each of you have had and can have on those you love and that those you care for it is the people let make this community that believe in one another and in each other and in this graduating class today and for the rest of your lives as the one graduating class of Grandview Heights City School District your legacy is now Inseparable from the school district and this community and the 99 graduate classes before you your leadership deep care and genuine belief in one another was and is remarkable take this passion and deep care and Lessons Learned with you on your journey to the next phase of your life  Oliver new homes once said  what lies behind us and what lies ahead of us  are insignificant compared to what lies Janus the future is always uncertain and it is always difficult to predict what I can predict however is that each of you will face challenges failures the like of which perhaps you've not face before remember who you are and what you believe in remember where you came from and what you've turn the long this journey that's far and what you stand for each of you possesses a very strong moral compass what lies within us and each do you will determine your success is grit perseverance and moral Integrity matter most in this life when times are tough remember that these are the that will help Define who you are and when your character is revealed not made believe in yourself and what you can and will do  Maya Angelou famously is quoted as saying I've learned that people will forget what you said will forget what you did but people will never forget how you made them feel each of you in this graduating last have made so many feel valued a part of something bigger than yourself in Victory and defeat this class is always conducted themselves with the utmost spect character and integrity in the classroom and outside the classroom your leadership and academics Athletics and the Arts is high expectations for classes that will follow in addition and importantly you are truly a terrific group of young ladies and man you are polite well-spoken intellectually curious caring interested in helping others and driven to do good in all areas of your life I thank you for choosing to be the best you can be it is because of the character of this class that I believe in your your future is promising and intern because you have a commitment to help others our future is promising as well congratulations to the 100th graduating class of Grandview Heights City Schools the class of 20 teen of this great historic institution that is Grandview Heights City Schools I wish each of you the very very best thank you good afternoon everyone my name is Patty Bauman I am getting ready to celebrate my 20th reunion from Grandview Heights High School from the class of 1995  that's a big kind of crazy that it was actually that long ago many of you might recognize me as mrs. Ferry and sister  I get that alot as someone who still lives in Grandview and is seen around town after his ass to speak here today it kind of came to me they told me they were having someone every decade come and speak to you my siblings and I graduated from Grandview in three different decades two in the 80s three in the 90s and my young brother in 2001 so  this community is definitely been a big part of my family and my life and as my sister is here and my children go to school here it will continue it continues so what's so special about Grandview to me also I was a Band Geek  low brass my memory is a fan cam the hayride in overnight we had and are tiny little 50 student band was always the only non-competition band at the Hilliard band Festival every year was always a big highlight these giant competition dance and then tiny little Grandview snuck in there every time I was also acquired girl involved in chamber listen to choir and singers I was that student who had to take freshman band my senior year because I had too many music classes to fit it in the schedule what a my favorite memories of Grandview High School was my junior year when our then choir director Dave Mansour helped us to show Grandview that this High School could indeed put on a musical it hadn't been done in many many years in Grandview and we put on scenes from Oklahoma have great scenery costumes and as the student who continued on to get a degree in voice performance I am so thrilled to see how much this community has embrace the High School Musical and just ran with it is phenomenal it'll come back and watch so as I leave it to say thanks for having me here congratulations gu class of 2015 the next 20 years will fly by I'm Terry Ann telina Williams class of 74  and I'd like to say that this field is really cool because his little things that can your shoes keep you awake there's a lot of romance about being the hundred class to graduate from Grandview special time in your lives and like Patty said the rest of its going to fly I didn't attend Grammy Scrolls my entire student career I transferred from Saint Kristen when's grade and it was called Junior High then I joined the band I played homeroom Olympics I was in the aviation Club I made friends High School I came to school everyday ready to learn and socialize I played every sport I could I wasn't the best player but I wouldn't teamwork humility I enjoyed marching band concert band and even though it doesn't seem like it was 44 years ago I found my first boyfriend in the band I was voted president of the Girls Athletic Association I set two records in track I took part in typing art Spanish figured out my strength and I leaned on them I got my degree from the Ohio State University and taught physical education 20 years after setting jump record who broke it all of these things they help me remember the photo challenges that are part of the school's I want going to do this got same boyfriend I found in band I married 36 years ago and I are both proud two daughters that are all so proud to be Bobcats  you've navigated this town's great of streets and alleys and formed fish and chips that will last your last Lifetime and family friends teachers and coaches for me as an alumnus I feel I have enjoyed more than my share wonderful relationships that continue to provide me with great opportunities soon you'll go beyond the boundaries of Grandview out into less familiar territory no Maps but don't despair you'll find your way Making Connections just by the fact that you lived and went to school and Grandview I hope this no shouldn't give comfort and pride all roads lead at least through Grandview many people will never have the opportunities you and I have had very slim off including being able to speak to you today I would now like to introduce our first student speaker Emma Hecker good afternoon fellow students honored guests faculty family and friends  A wise man once said do not follow where the path may lead go instead where there is no path and leave a trail  and today we the class of 2015 are percents if the opportunity to do just this as this is the 100th commencement of Grandview Heights High School it feels appropriate to take this cartoon tea to reflect not only on how we have grown as individuals that how we have been grown as a class through Grandview of course but through each are there as well  from being scared of cooties and kindergarten awkward middle school dances and learning to drive we have all changed and I think turn the bus for the better we battled it out and bird-eating spider we survived head injuries at 5th grade camp we exercised our Play Turn Miss like nurse gym class during Matt ball and painful runs down to the tennis courts in kindergarten we took turns marrying Willis he did her  she did wear a tuxedo everyday and on the way home from middle school soccer games make many terrible Renditions of Don't Stop Believin we have cheered on the boys that states shared a mutual hatred of West Jeff and even survived 2014 twice according to this year's invitations  we all got over fear of mr. Peters and finally learn mr. McCarthy says  we came together to support each other when times got tough and we had to say goodbye first an exceptional Pier teammate and fellow student and then to an extraordinary teacher coach father and friend 412 on years and yes they have been long we have grown together as a class learning laughing and coming to people we are today it has not always been easy or fun but none the less we made it while it may seem that we have been learning for an eternity this is just the beginning High School is a time of Discovery and while I think we have all learned a lot about her so snort I'm here at ghhs many of us waiting still asking ourselves questions such as who am I what will I become the impact the world I believe these are all fair questions and ones that will soon be answered as we go our separate ways  today we are student but soon we will be CEOs lawyers doctors artists musicians and teachers as cheesy as it sounds we will be the leaders of tomorrow and despite all our differences there is one thing in which we can all be proud and that is we are the class of 2015 at Grandview Heights High School and through all the change we are about to endure this is something that will always hold this is the day we're all those long nights spent on homework packets and the tears shed over calculus pay off this is the day we're all of Miss is fist bumps in mr. Richard struggles on the announcements can be celebrated this is the day where we can put all our differences side us together and truly embody what it means to be a bobcat so now I challenge myself and all of my classmates to take this as a chance to do as Emerson said let today Mark A New Beginning a chance to forward her and Trail let us leave Grandview proud and let us remember that from here on out we have been given the tools to become whatever we desire let us not sell ourselves short I know that if we continue to work hard we can all go on to accomplish great things with the help of our teachers families mentors and friends we will continue to grow to change and to make a difference in the world  as many of us know Grandview is a play I know that there will be few times in our lives we find the support and guidance that we have had in this community so let us remember cherish love and hold it close to our hearts and through whatever life may bring always remember the memories the joys pains and the friendships we have encountered at ghhs congrats guys we made it I know it's welcome my classmate Katie Flanagan alright thanks thanks Emma so family friends staff and students this is it be reached the end of a truly remarkable chapter each of us has spent a total of about 30 next thousand hours in Grandview classroom and countless hours at home in anticipation of receiving a piece of paper and a handshake what we will actually take away is so much more than that mr. Chaffin has been constantly reminding us not to wish this time away this advice was hard to she ate when we have several AP tests quickly approaching scholarship applications to complete and the lab report and English essay due on the same day however now that we have reached the end of this chapter I can truly understand what he means  every senior throughout the nation is going through an in sing a new time their life but the seniors of Grandview Heights have it best not only are we part of such an incredible and unusual Community but we are also the 100th graduating class from this amazing School  is extremely unusual to go to a school where everyone literally knows everyone not just their names their interests and their personalities but also of course their siblings  it is unusual to go to a school where kids don't put next on their lockers and still nothing gets taken except for gum is unusual to have a principal that knows your interests hobbies and fears when you asks how your grandmas doing frequently sings and plays the guitar for the entire School participates in most of this in section chants and is always asking for a fist bump  it is unusual to go to a school that will have the entire student body escorted with free lunches to the high school boys soccer State semifinal game which was amazing what does take a look back real quick on Alex Hayes when he scored the first goal with a PK and Tristan Rose sealed the deal with an incredible header in the second half sending the boys to the states for the first time ever is the usual to live in a place for the entire community and I mean the entire community of Grandview showed up at Crew Stadium to support our boys while they were competing for the state championship and saw is the usual to go to a school that displays students are along the Halls not in regular frames but a 6 or 10 foot murals is an usual to live in a community where the most exciting thing in the police report is a bicyclist who ran a red light  it is usual to have scholar athletes excel in three Sports while also participating in clubs and other extracurricular activities it is a new let's have a cross country Runner Eli Reed qualify and compete at States for each of his four years of high school  as you can tell I could go on on Grandview in usual and special place a place that most cannot truly appreciate without being immersed in the so-called bubble Grandview students have a reputation of being mature intelligent and responsible as well as athletic  artistically gift and involve  this is what makes up Bobcat Pride I always felt this Bobcat Pride but I really didn't understand its Prestige until I met Mister Chavin  he was trying to get the scoop from a student perspective he said so the school likes all the students leave and go wherever they want for lunch I replied yes sir all the students in the high school are allowed to leave for lunch some go to places like Panera Wendy's and chipotle While others go home he paused for a moment and then replied when they all come back his reply was confirmation that this was unusual  Grandy has been the greatest place to grow up turn the music staff here at Granby Heights has prepared us to go out into the world with the greatest knowledge we could possibly attain we cannot thank you enough for that play obstacle we all may come across is one that even the teachers could not teach meeting new people  being with the same ad kids in second grade and cool it's been really cool and the bond that we share is incredible I believe our class is one that is truly inclusive and sincerely caring even when the lads take a prank too far the masterminds Ryan McHugh Jaxtr an acre and a Willis day are all there apologize  now I've asked you what kids apologize for a prank but they didn't even get in trouble for  the answer is Grandview Grandview class of 2015 kids will just to make sure no one's feelings are hurt and to reassure others but it was all in fun now some say I was being overconfident having my graduation party early but I thought I would jump the gun to be able to tend everyone else's I enjoyed my party not because it was for me but instead because I got to bring everyone I truly love together in the same place my aunts and uncles were hugging me and telling me congrats as Grant Varner watch by shirtless with two plates of Bahama Mamas and Carfagna's lasagna it was truly a beautiful sight my cousin asked me why several of my male classmates had their shirts off after regretfully stating that most of them were off Market I explained it was due to senior tag she then informed me that her and many other surrounding schools senior tag is not playing bathing suits but no I replied with a line I once heard Mitchell Keller say he was also known as funky Mitch  we are all like brothers and sisters and everyone away too well to see each other in the birthday suits  this reiterates the point I made earlier our class is unusual in many ways mostly because we are less like a high school class and more like a family or a lot more like family no other than the few new students does Jack massinople inline Baskin meeting new people and seeing new things will be an experience we haven't really had before with that said the best advice I can give to be absolutely Fearless wherever you go go with all your heart this advice is for both inside and outside the classroom inside the classroom beef voice and ask questions in front of the whole class even if the class size is larger than a high school population when volunteers are needed raise your hand and go for I'm assed out on way too much like freshman Powderpuff football just because I feared I might embarrass myself the only way to learn outside of the classroom is to be Fearless travel see the world Chinese food in don't miss out on an opportunity just because it is the unknown wherever you are in life push yourself out of your comfort zone seen you on make a habit of striving for success my grandma Flanagan passed away when my father was 18 but I know the kind of woman that she was because I live by her words be good and kind and strong and wise  this 100th graduating class of 2015 will walk out of Grandview Heights unique from every other class  together throughout the past four years we have celebrated both emack and athletic accomplishments but also kept each other strong during true hardships even the two most difficult times were not all bad though play Tallest to extremely important lessons first to face each day with hope and strength  and second to chase your dream each day with a smile next year some of us are going on to the Ohio State University some to Chicago brown Syracuse and other prestigious schools some of us what you've been gone to Ohio University to be Bobcats forever no matter what mascot we will identify ourselves with next year we will all have been Bobcats next and will forever be cheetah strong in our hearts  the last thing I will leave you with is the Bible verse that my sister Marine shared with me to help get me through the most difficult time in my high school career it is John 16:33  in the world you will have tribulation but take heart I have overcome the world  now I challenge all of you to leave the Heights and overcome the world congratulations class of 2015 does truly been a remarkable experience good afternoon it's an honor and a privilege to be with you this afternoon and represent the decade of the fifties as a member of the class of 1955 graduates here to be Harley congratulated for your successful completion of the physical social an educational challenges that have been presented to you over the last 13 years from one of the finest school districts in the beautiful  your record of performance has been exemplary in the community and alumni are very proud of your achievements  as you leave this facility today you will start down a new individual path with new challenges as you utilize the Knowledge and Skills learned during these years and will learn in years to come and navigate your success the rest of your lives and change the world that we live in  I would however like to take the opportunity  2 percenter challenge that you probably have not given much thought to up until now the challenge would be to continue to stay in contact with your current friends and classmates during these ensuing years art class the class of 1955 has learned of the benefits of maintaining the friends and classmates that is sending years ago as you have assembled today we maintain those relationships by gathering all every 5 years beginning with the 10th anniversary of our graduation  however rather than gathering at an Newton picnic  or having just a dinner or open house  all this at one of our classmates homes or one of the are class reunions in compass weekend of activities all designed to promote the renewal and a friendships and catch up on our classmate men's lives we've generally started with a bobcat football game and afterward and afterwards gathered at an open house posted by the sea your classmate that have lit that has lived and worked his whole life in Grandview Saturday We Gather at the shoulder house at 1 what's for lunch which is a great time to renew old friendships a number of times we visited the high school later that day to get caught up with the chain and learn what new things are happening in the education field  that evening We Gather for a dinner banquet honor those that are no longer with us show slides from pictures provided by classmates and continue to reminisce late Sunday morning we got it for the final time for lunch to continue to catch up and bid goodbye to those who must head back home have we been successful maintaining these relationships well based on the fact that we generally have 65% or more of our available classmates and attendance traveling from 17 States and one foreign country Sweden we've been successful in maintaining close relationships these relationships tend to continue between the 5-year reunions and warmly manufactures during time give me and comforting to anyone in the group  should you find a way to stay connected with your classmates I believe that as you grow older you'll find that some of your best friends are those very classmates that are seated with today  once again congratulations we all have confidence you'll be successful we will continue our pride as you travel down your individual pass and effect positive change in the world we all live have a out on the hundredth commencement ceremony certainly special thing and we're looking forward to making a special as possible as we can for you and we hope it's something that you will know wow that was amazing very well done relations class my name is Leslie Foster Main and I am just so thrilled to be here graduation me and sit so very very hard in accomplish obviously so much  some are going off to college and some off to work but you're all going knowing that you've received a diploma from one of the finest schools in central Ohio  50 years ago I was right where you are except we were inside and I grew up the youngest of four children we all started at Robert Louis Stevenson Elementary School all the way through 12 years graduated from Grandview High School my parents just like yours enabled me to get Career Education and it provided me with a strong foundation on which to build my future  from Grandview I went on to the Ohio State University and in 1969 of bachelor's degree and then just 25 short years later a master's degree I had the great privilege of teaching school for 32 years and I attended many graduations but this is by far the best this is so much fun to be standing back here on the football field and just I know there are some people up there that I probably which makes it so much more fun growing up in the 50s and 60s was an adventure my mother Virginia Forester Tut dancing in the basement of my home from 1951 to 1971 and many most girls in Grandview and a few voice to took dancing from my mom I met one right here who took dancing she told me took dancing from my mom young children in Grandview we didn't you know we didn't realize what a wonderful place it was kind of took it for granted but we knew all of our friends parents and all of our friends parents knew us we ran around bicton what everybody's house and the only time we never go home was when our parents called us in for dinner to do our homework and to sleep other than that we are exploring Grandview Woods which is Wyman Woods playing baseball and swinging on the swings while their boyfriends played baseball founded Oxley field which is Pierce field now and in the summer we spent all of our days at the Grandview pool  are sports conference when I was in high school what's the Central Buckeye League the CDL in our archrival was Upper Arlington High School  I can remember as a cheerleader I can remember Play Night Football games and then in the winter those basketball games against those Golden Bears  the Safety and Security of knowing that everybody in the community was looking out for you as I said was something that we took for granted we didn't really appreciate it at the time but now as a parent and Grandpa I realize what a gift my parents gave me and I too was blessed to be able to do that for my two boys my son been who's here somewhere with my granddaughter Linden in 1993 with 79 students just like you guys and then my son Zach is he been in Sac is he graduated 1994 with 78 classmates  my class the class of M65 has the great privilege of being the largest class ever to have graduated from Grandview High School 165 classmates were the Baby Boomers are come home from World War II and our country back and encourage them to get an education to get a job to get married and to raise families  when I graduated from high school in Baines Johnson was President having taken over when President John F Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 it was a Friday in November I remembered as I'm sure many of you up there do I was sitting in 6. French class what does Morgan's class and principal Ralph Barry got on the intercom and he gave us the devastating news everything shut down everything was all of Grandview the city the state the entire nation shutdown and honor of President John F Kennedy enclosing I'd like to offer one piece of advice because you can't have a commencement speech without some advice from an old lady NN Puritas take time every day to thank God for the Privileges the gifts the Opera cities that you've been given because it's certainly a blessing to have grown up in Grandview congratulations to you all and may God bless you good afternoon my name is rhyme with you and I'm the president of Grandview Heights High School class of 2015 it is my distinct pleasure to introduce the keynote speaker for the 100th commencement of the Grandview light City Schools  are speaker earned his bachelor's degree in education from Baldwin Wallace and his master's degree in education from Akron University in 1986 he was named the head football coach of Youngstown State University where in his 15-year tenure he won four Division 1 double a national type in chips  in 2001 he was named head coach of the Ohio State University football team where he was the head coach for 10 years while at Ohio State the Buckeyes 1:7 Champions 7 Big Ten championships went to a BCS bowl games and won the 2002 national championship his impressive .820 winning percentage is only surpassed by the by the fact that he had 133 of his players earn degrees while he was the head coach before landing in his current position he served as the Executive Vice President for Student Success at Akron University he was charged with creating a division dedicated to the academic and Career Success of the Akron students  current he is serving as the ninth president of Youngstown State University his dedication to young adults education and their success is what has brought him here say  it is with great pride that I introduce to you present coach Jim Tressel thank you so much Ryan you have no idea how honored and humbled we are to be here celebrating 100 Years of Excellence  celebrating this play class of 2015  Ellen and I spent 10 wonderful years just down the road and witnessed many many great things tell me from this community the graduates of this wonderful school and it truly is an honor to be here when Emma Polo reached out to us time ago  we were so taken by this opportunity to be here with you today between that and how I've gotten countless emails  letters phone calls from proud proud graduates of Grandview Heights in fact I got 321 emails from Jamie O'Shaughnessy just individually because she was so excited about this class  last night we were riding in the car in the phone rang and it was Larry larr how about a hand for Larry Larson dear just spend some time bear with this great camps and unfortunately had to head back to Southern California but was in tears as he talked about this special day this opportunity to celebrate 100 extraordinary years in a very very special class that marks the 100 class about a year ago I got a call from Jim Lachey know I've known Jim Lachey since he was your age and he told me that he'd heard I was speaking here and he said you finally arrived  you finally done something special  and I happen to Gree  most recently I was in church this morning  fell it sitting in the Pew behind me tap me on the shoulder and he said aren't you going to be at Grandview Heights High School today  I said yeah he probably said so hi my son Ben kidner  Kinder is going to graduate  and that explained while during the entire service he was praying hard for Ben praying hard being so thankful he was thanking teachers he was thinking guidance counselors he was thanking policeman he was 9 he was thanking everyone for that opportunity that his son had this is just full day here  this is a day of gratitude  and as our last speaker said who probably graduated 50 years ago if you remember one lesson from today remember how fortunate you are to have been in this community to a graduated from the school this is a day of gratitude this is a weekend of gratitude and was so nice to start the day with the Pledge of Allegiance turning to our flag this is a weekend of gratitude for all the men and women and their families over the many many decades and centuries  that have sack Vice given the ultimate sacrifice so that we might be here today  allowed to get together and to celebrate the extraordinary work  have a community on a school system for a hundred years and especially the most recent edgewood's  truly is a day of gratitude we're grateful for the parents  we're grateful for the parents for 100 years the one make sure we had one of the finest school systems in the nation  right here in central Ohio  appreciative today's faculty and the faculty that  walk these halls for 100 years  we're so appreciate for the entire Community This truly is  a day of gratitude and we always like to tell our young people over the years that if truly you are going to carry yourself with an attitude of gratitude that you truly do understand how blessed you are how fortunate you are  how lucky you are to be in this country to be in this state to be in this community if you're really really understand that then you understand that with this tradition comes responsibility  it's the way we felt when ordinary things were going on at Youngstown State it's the way we felt when extraordinary things were going on at Ohio State that we were so grateful that we were part of that history and that we felt we had a tremendous responsibility  the carry forward that true and that's just what's being asked of the most recent Wonderful class of Grandview Heights with this tradition is the responsibility and one of the greatest responsibilities we have is what mr. Chaffin said where the two guiding lights of this for killer class he said they were loved and they were leadership  the responsibility this group of 80 people has to make sure that they take with them all the blessings they've had and they go forward as a leader  clearly standing that leadership is not a position that you might hold a brand name on a diploma that you might hold leadership is the action that you take to serve other people  that's what leadership is all about that's happened in this community that's what's happened in this country is that people have understood that they're not going to get tricked by you thinking that leadership is a rag that you have or a car that you drive or a notoriety that you might have but true leadership action that you take to serve others because you're grateful for the action that has been taken for you so that you can be at this point in your lives now leadership has to take a little bit of a risk and make it known to everyone that they really do want to be servants to others that it's not about them it's about the people that they're around and if that's the way we're going to carry on the tradition of Grandview Heights of the United States of America  while they take that risk and make it known if that's what they would like to do  they then have to be responsible for every action every word every tweet every Instagram  every thought the comes across their mind and enters their actions they also have remember that if you're truly do want to influence and influence and serve in a positive way that you're going to need to be influenceable you're going to need to be able to and willing to sit and listen to what others think  take their point of you assess it and not just the boom that we know everything to have open minds and Open Hearts and make sure if we really want to serve others that we are interested in what they believe what they have to say  and what's important to them  and of course if we're going to carry on great tradition it's gone for 100 years with the leadership  we're going to have to make sure we understand that leaders never stop never quit it doesn't matter what happens doesn't matter what the score is it doesn't matter what happens in their lives it doesn't matter the hardship or obstacles or any of the things that they face  they are never going to stop seeking to be a leader who serves others lastly I would say to you Future Leaders  is it there's something about those who serve others there's something about  people who want to serve and make it about the group rather than themselves is they have a sense of impending greatness they have an aura about them  where everyone can identify that you know what if I spend some time around it's going to be a good thing that they're here to be my friend they're here to make my life better they just have that sense of impending greatness I've heard from every faculty member every board member every administrator here today you know this really is a special class this really is the class that should have been  the one hundredth  and that tell play that they have that sense of impending greatness that is they go forward they understand it's not about them shutters and that they're going to carry on that tradition as a bobcat in the future  every time we headed out to the locker room we were from the locker room to the field we were nervous whether it was 15 years at Youngstown State or 10 years at Ohio State on game day you're nervous it's kind of like same day here for you you're getting ready to go out into the Game of Life here's what we said to one another and I'll close with this just make sure was crystal clear we knew what was expected of one another was a little poem by Edward Everett Hale  very short but it spoke to what we needed from each other  and would like this I am only one  but I am I can't do everything but I can do something and that I can do I ought to do and what I ought to do by the grace of God I shall do  and that's all we need from one another that's we need from the hundred class Grandview Heights that's what we need from this class of 2015 and if we will all do what it is we can do for one another  regardless of the difficulty of today's challenges will be in great shape God bless all of you go cats go Bucks go penguins okay as coach said today is game day and I'm a bit nervous so thank you my name is Barbara Bush Macaulay and I graduated in 1985 from Greenville Playskool I just currently finished my 26 year of teaching at Stevenson Elementary here in Grandview Grandview was a community of long-standing tradition obviously we're here celebrating our 100th commencement Grandview is anime community in throughout all of our years here there been lots of changes but many Traditions have remained I myself went through Grandview was a student in the middle and I have since watch my own children go through to in fact my daughter Megan is graduating here today so I know a bit about then now then we had big hair aquanut and Van Halen now we have many patties Kenny Chesney and Twenty One Pilots then we went to theaters to watch Caddyshack and back to the future we rushed home from football games on Friday night to watch Dallas now it's Netflix and movies on demand anywhere anytime then we had Michael Jordan you have LeBron  my point is that will point is that while there have been changes Grandview kids and their families have very much for me in the same we are still a community that sticks together and Good Times any bad we are still a community that works hard and has fun but most importantly we're still the community that values are children education as well as their future today we are here to honor the work these young people have done that their families have supported and the work we're yet to do we are here to acknowledge the long-standing tradition of Excellence that has existed in Grandview for 100 years and was no finer example please scratch what's today with that we want you to know that Grandview is and always will be your home no matter how far you go or how close should then now and always we will know who you are we will know all that you will be you are a part of the tradition of what's congratulations class of 2015 and now the time we've all been waiting for all right president Debbie Brannon the class of 1945 Shirley Arthur hatch you're very welcome  all I want to say is thank you for being here everybody has I would probably have said anyway so you're not going to have to say I'm here or very long but it's really a privilege for me as a graduate from the class of 1945 70 years ago I was saying so it's so much fun to be here on this very special history this is a historic day we have to remember history is important part of our life and these young graduates are just part of that history right now and it's so much fun to be able to sell a with you your graduation from Grandview High School this is in 1945 it was also tour of the historic date if you'll remember how many of you remember we were fighting a war in 1945 and nineteen 100 years that I was in high school that freshman through senior we were at War this country but in 1940 five on May 8th  Germany surrendered and the war in Europe was over I thought we should at least remember this wonderful thing tell Molly that enjoy Japan surrendered so the war was totally over and we were just so excited and if you saw any of the movie Towing news at the theaters just saw people jumping around and excited in New York City in or place else there was just such a wonderful time so I thought we really remember this is Memorial Day weekend is that wonderful to graduated on Memorial Day weekend I'm sure they only reason the Japan surrender was because whether we do we drop the atom bomb and it's the only time that I can remember in his but that ball has ever been dropped but it's saved so many lives both ours and they're so we wanted to I just wanted to remember the fisting Memorial Day weekend that the we have to be thankful that we live in a country that's free and we have to for all the sacrifices that were made to keep us that way it's that wonderful  so I grew up in Grandview  from the how am I was 2 months old my parents moved to Grandview and I just love it it's it's the most exciting little Community to be involved in hello I was really blessed because one of the things that I had was the Excellence School System even back then it was not what it is today but it really good and I took advantage of every single mom with the lie was to school 2  take advantage of the teachers that we had they were really wonderful teachers too and I'm sure your faculty is just as good but this they were they were special to us too in fact my history teacher was so good that I wouldn't let the OSU when I graduated I had a minor in history because I took all elective courses and they were history classes I just thought history was very very important and I still do everything that's about history I look it up and read about it and I also read books for pleasure and book reports fun because I enjoyed reading the book so I was thought I was supposed to report on and by the time I was a senior I realize that they they have been preparing me for the life ahead just like you have been prepared and it's it's amazing what you can put you have done I'm just I'm sitting in all over there at all of the things that you have a office in your life up till now and you're going to go on and do even more everybody has said that so I was just repeating what everybody else is said I just I just want I just took advantage of every opportunity that when I was in school I was all the scholarship teams do you have Fellowship teams now  no well then we had scholarship teams and we took tests and so forth that's it that's 70 years ago if you keep thinking is it been that long so I was on the scholarship teams and I was  do you have a Girls Athletic Association I was the president you don't even know what that is  some people know how there goes a I know you have homecoming am I was on the homecoming queen Court  and I know you have a National Honor Society and I was inducted the vet to  and I am I was in every singing group are you all going to be singing later actually I love to sing and even though we had what we call it an annual talent show those days  I even I even sang in the talent show it Slots of Fun and we had a great time and I made lots of friends while I was four of us it's so special this us the school and I know you'll feel you get out in the world and when you say you graduated from Grandview Heights High School everybody really since it is really so special  so I don't really want to take a long time cuz I know you guys are standing in the in the sun and the wind and the but I think that was for the time that you're going to be singing the alma mater but so I'm just going to close by saying I wish you the very very best I should go out and unlock in the world and I know you will because from all the things I said about you today I know it's really super that you're a super class and I'm I just can't delete it's been a hundred years and that is so special that you are part of it isn't that wonderful I appreciate that  do you want to sing with me you want to say yeah I know that I don't know the song I mean the music yeah  she's going to sing with me let's do this alright okay I got one more thing to say is that okay yeah yeah one more thing
