Summer Learning 2021: IGNITE

A Message from Dr. Jamie Lusher, Chief Academic Officer

As we draw closer to the culmination of this unprecedented school year, our district is looking forward to providing a variety of rich and engaging learning experiences for our students in grades K-12 to enjoy this summer!

Summer 2021 will be an opportunity for the Grandview Heights Schools and community to connect, explore, bridge and ignite our passions for learning!  We are offering Summer Ignite Courses to any interested students. Please take a moment to review the attached brochure and register for any courses of interest.

To register for a course, download the attached PDF, and click on the link or hover over the QR code.  Please note: The Kindergarten Academy AM session is from 9 to 11 a.m., not 9 to 10 a.m. as listed on the PDF.  The registration link and QR code reflect the correct time.

Our district is collaborating and partnering with community organizations to provide camp experiences throughout the entire summer. We have curated a list of camps and learning opportunities for students. To learn more, visit Summer Learning 2021

We are also pleased to offer access to a variety of digital resources and activities for our students and families to explore and enjoy! GHSD Digital Resource Menu

Additionally, we have created a “Choose Your Own Summer Adventure” to help our students engage in reading, writing, math, STEM, and social sciences throughout the summer months.

Lastly, please remember that the "Summer Slide" is real! Most estimates suggest that approximately 75 percent of a student’s achievement is produced by factors unrelated to what happens in the classroom (i.e., what students do beyond the school day). One of the most important of these factors is the annual and lengthy summer break (NWEA, 2017).

The good news, however, is that research indicates that reading 200 pages per week (that's only 29 pages per day) increases student achievement and promotes cognitive growth.  Be sure to sign up for the Grandview Heights Public Library Summer Reading Club and check out the Grandview Heights Schools Teacher Picks.  Remember to plan your summer reading by completing your Ideal Bookshelf Summer 2021.  (See attached)

Thank you, as always, for all that you do to help make the Grandview Heights Schools community such a wonderful learning environment! We are looking forward to a summer full of opportunity, hope, and learning!

Best,

Dr. Jamie Lusher
