so first off for those of you that I haven't met my name is Annie help and I have a good fortune and privilege of serving superintendent I just completed my second year as superintendent in Grandview so I'm starting my third year on behalf of Board of Education most of which are present here today and the Grandview Heights schools we'd like to welcome each and every one of you your voice matter this process can it does my heart good to see so many presents does my heart good to see so many present so what are the outcomes for today why are we here that's the first how come we want to answer the question why are we here shut down for us to educate all of you about Grandview Heights facility planning process what what happened what happened what the process will look like on this journey for the next year together and finally to build understanding collectively on the facility assessment that has been completed by play Harrison Harrison Planning Group to educate all of us on what confined what are the fact today was well as Garner feedback on what we shared ideas questions build understanding what you all heard what residue is what did  so why are we here Grandview has a permit Improvement letter that was passed in 2010 about $550,000 annually the amount of money is the fun that we used to make Capital Improvements and maintenance expenditures on all of cilities District lot that money however is also used for technology technology infrastructure everything from Wireless change servers to computers that we purchased replacement computers overhead projectors and smartphone  then what have discovered is that there is a significant Gap deferred maintenance and capital Improvement and RP fun that we have on an annual basis  and idea has existed for many years and as a result of that Gap we to make priority of priorities with respect to facilities and the kin proverbially is getting kicked so why are we here well the easy thing to do would be to ignore the situation can you go to find out if more detail what the facility assessment about Kevin Harris is going to share that with you later thought the right thing to do can a community like this with is an educated of a community with as committed of a community that we have is to build understand about this reality and have collected conversations about what if anything we should do how are we going to collaboratively address this and I could be anything from doing nothing in continuing on our current path to I don't know what because no decisions with your name so I want to give you a flavor of some of our existing facilities so I can couple pictures and I just wanted a generally share this with you I need to say to you we have a deferred made it to Capital Improvement problem in is a picture of the exterior I believe this one is of the high school and I showed this because for those meeting tell me you have a gutter issue in there someone around the seals the windows and wood is Warped again this is a picture I believe it. so I thought it would be appropriate just to share with you is I stand before you today some of the rumors that I confirmed now what I just learned I was talking with mr. back advance of the say he should be two rivers that I hadn't heard in that are not on this list however I wanted to share with you some of the rumors that I have her play decisions of already been made in that there is a plan already put in place and that plan is done and that this is smoking me I've heard that there is a facility task force this meeting and secret I've heard that we are paying for desired outcomes that are vaal ready Mendes I've heard that we're going to demo Stevenson Elementary to use it for other purposes  I've heard that were purchasing Gail Davis Funeral Home although someone called me just the other day and told me that a developer purchased it I don't know if that's true or not by the way I don't have to silicate any rumors telecharge gas at least I heard that I don't know what the truth I really don't but someone did call me and tell me that text from I heard you were going to feel this new high school on the football field and put the football field  I heard that call monse K12 central campus on the footprint that we're standing out I've heard they were going to tear down every building I heard it was going to send our students to Columbus City Schools during the building process  the rumors I've heard IQ off maybe heard others again back to share with me some other so I wanted to just start with some facts so what it what do we know to be true I want just quickly to share it please you can continue to take pictures but but briefly we have established a live to wedding planning process web page it can be linked powder from arm a web page District to go to the main webpage District facility planning we have a bunch of information already up there and including were videotaping this presentation and its PowerPoint will be on there as well by the way not that you can't play pictures V5 please by all means do but I also want you to know that that this will be posted on that webpage tomorrow two-player educational facility Planet this is what he does for a living has done a number of acility planning processes throughout the state of Ohio name is Kevin Harrison and he owns a group called Harrison planning room hpg Harrison Planning Group Kevin and his staff have completed a comprehensive facility assessment hub Davidson elementary the kindergarten accidentally building Edison intermediate Larson Middle School Grandview High School that assessment is done is it going to share that with you we also have through Kevin Edge group is doing sylheti audit of our at facility across from the high school all that fashion cuz I just share with you is a comprehensive facility Sussman hpg group is completed that marks the first happy face too which is community student Outreach best build understanding about what the process will look like  to do nothing or to do something we've only completed phase that's all this been completed this meeting marks the beginning of phase 2 and it isn't until 3 where the hurry up options for consideration so no drawing no options if you have been discussed  we have establish a community-wide engagement calendar and if I may as well as I believe email to all community members is down here these are the meetings that will take place through this horse of this entire year that also is on the facility planning website no decisions have been made  the process will dictate the outcome really important for me although I don't know many of you well that this process is done with Integrity transparency and plastic and when it comes to have these kinds of conversations they're bigger than any one person because any of ended this decides if there is a need to do something those decisions are going to dare I say outlive most all of us in this room so it's bigger than Andy call it's bigger than any one of us and I think that is important to understand  doing nothing could be an option can very well be an outcome I think when you learn the results and outcomes of the facility assessment I think we meet you have a challenge that we must I want to take an opportunity and introduce and thank all the members of our community or serving delete a hope I want to introduce the other service above self and I thank you each and every one of those folks have a busy so I appreciate your time energy effort and experience in their related work that they bring to the table I wanted to also make serving on the facility task force also are Grandview Heights staff members Mark Walter Marcus or director 21st Century Learning right back there Bradley Jesse true I also want to just take a moment to thank this board for their leadership you know it is my belief it is mine for you it may not be yours but it is mine that the easy thing to do when faced with the current reality these facilities to do nothing and I applaud this board of education for Having the courage and Leadership to at least have the conversation in cages community in this important conversation so I want to take a nap Trinity and introduce or stand up Debbie Brandon was running a little late Stephanie Evans  stuffing Alyssa palmisciano was it so thank you for being here and thank you for your leadership  so what is the facility task force done so far incidentally I will also want you to know link to our webpage are the facility task force agenda so they were powerful in screening McKenzie that made application for the RFQ to VA facility planner and engage the community in a relevant process around Chili's that you conduct the facility assessment that could help us frame a process of Integrity of transparency and Trust to engage our community in the conversation in our current reality they helped us interview screen and hire hpg Kevin Harrison big help give us feedback on the community calendar what went well in fact they help so one of the other things they've done even more reason is presented to them a draft of my PowerPoint presentation to the community and they gave me critical friends feedback about you know what  they didn't work very well and what I didn't do well and so that's another example this group is going to continue to provide what kind of feedback to us as well as all of you  as I mentioned within the last year we could gauge Kevin Harrison hpg facility play we completed a an assessment of all of our facilities you know it is important that we do have saved modern efficient to sylheti that doesn't matter you know it is important that we have 88 compliant facilities you know imagine if you were in a wheelchair trying to navigate this facility or imagine if you're in a wheelchair coming to the high school where do you enter where do you access an elevator if the elevators work and if the elevator isn't working it's so old you have to have a park manufactured to fix it which takes long time is more expensive  I've learned that this obviously we discovered that our facilities are aged and that there are inefficient are buildings on average range 8 years old are high school at believes 90-plus years old and it is a there are challenges to ability to actualize 21st Century Learning due to our current classroom structures organization socks it is also very important at least in my judgment in this community to recognize that our existing buildings possess great Beauty cultural significance to the community and its history and its Legacy and one of the things that I will tell you I enjoy most as superintendent Ranger superintendent is alumni in the proud tradition that the alumni have when they come back and visit these facilities I can't tell you the pride they have of this community and of their school so there is it almost an emotional connection to some of these two and I think it's important to share that parently it honestly with each and every one I also want you to know that when you learn about Kevin's assessment I think it's going to be clear to you that we have some challenges and one of the things I want also outline is that no 80 to 100 years ago this community made an investment and the investment that they made the buildings that we're still going to school in and it many instances those buildings are  worn out and serious it's something that we use a community can decide on to improve the existing facilities that we have I know not what that it look like again it may be nothing but I think it important that we have that conversation no decisions are on the table currently this is about process process process  and that it is this Collective process that will dictate know outcome for some type of alcohol as I mentioned to you we've created a web page it is live as I sit here really now we're videotaping this presentation for those of you that are able are for those of your friends and neighbors that aren't able to be here that will be uploaded to the webpage PowerPoint will be uploaded to the webpage we plan to keep that webpage up throughout this entire journey and process what would a shift gears a little bit here and I want to talk about a book that's called creating innovators the making of young people who will change the world in his tell me Wagner's education Harvard Professor he also wrote a wonderful book called the play Tony makes a strong argument that education and our Global Marketplace in global economy has engaged in a major shift turn that shift is from a knowledge economy to an innovation account a knowledge economy to an innovation economy but on this phone right here the ability of every person arguably in this room to find out knowledge and fat quit rate  efficiency is alive and well so what he argues that if this is true the way in which we educate students and how we do that must shift in change what city articulate in the global Chima Gap in an article he wrote called riggory to find it is high school graduate should possess and this is part of that thinking of the ship from a knowledge economy to an innovation economy in the role of schools skill not just knowledge in order to compete in college and in the global Marketplace and he argues that these skills are important if not important than teaching level 1 knowledge so critical thinking and problem solving collaboration and Leadership and adaptability initiative an entrepreneurial ISM effective oral and written communication assessing and analyzing information jury an imagination it's one thing for me to talk about this play his shift that in that is taking place in education to play a video will it tell him Daddy trailer from a movie called most likely to succeed and I think it articulate some of what I'm trying to articulated a very visual authentic way horrible about this notion of a shift from a knowledge economy to an innovation  so if this is true  what is stop is Educators and educational leaders and Community leaders understanding about this reality with our educational staff with our immunity and what if this is true how we develop lessons and how students are learning must change how are we providing opportunities for students not only to demonstrate knowledge but to demonstrate application and with that now  for example the finding of critical thinking looks like providing students opportunities to collaborate around and developed by Sears around what that means developing questions a lot of times of wonderful measure of intellect is it spewing what you know but what did you ask  you know they didn't Thursday one of the things Tony Wagner believes earnestly is the world is less and less about what you know and more and more about what you can do  so planes are project-based learning design challenges  one of the things when I interview prospective teachers that what's my favorite question to ask is what is wood when you plan a lesson what do you ask yourself how do you begin thinking about that one of the look for it is in almost all teachers say that as well I wanted it I want to know what it is I want to teach students to know by the end of that person a good answer what I'm really looking for though is not just them thinking about what it is they want students to know but what it is they want used to know and be able to do by the end of that lesson because it's a subtle difference but it's significant and it's that be able to do you are built  the other question I like to ask for when I go in although I don't do this as much in my what superintendent today and will the win I was up a principal and assistant principal I had the Good Fortune of observing a lot of teachers teach and what how is look for  who's doing the coffee the world and what what is that mean Andy well it mean if a teacher is standing in front of the class the entire. Who's doing the cognitive or the teacher of the students one of Moore's that I have is it all to be at minimum 50-50 the students ought to be actively engaged in doing the work not just demonstrating pause what are the lines I like most in that is when the guy says I got that test back I crumpled it up and threw it in the trash knowledge base test  so what are we do have some small examples of innovative but I like to call Innovative learning space Square One Stevenson at Addison and the high school in this is an example of what that looks like this is who's doing the call me before here's another example this is it Edison up here the teacher is not at the front of the room here's an example of a student demonstrating using a Smartboard their knowledge so I got a lot of talking at you Angel apologize but I'm trying to build understanding I'm going to turn it over to Kevin he's going to share with you a little more about the process summer beginning in phase two as well as the results now comes of the facility assessment that he's conducting breaking Federated thank you  what a wonderful crowd going exciting to start on projects like this and and the First Community being so many people does this really means a lot and it really helps me to help us understand that this community is really into this hold it fit that they're supporting you got all the really good slides I've got to deal with what we've done up to this point and a lot of actual stuff a lot of the detail oriented stuff the assessment work I'm going to just very briefly over what we talked about and what we mean by assessment of the building as any hidden said all of this information all of the assessments of each one of the building will be online and available through the website but just so you can better understand what it's essman is it's basically just a look at all the physical parts and pieces within a building am I say the physical parts and pieces and and and and services within a bill we look at the electrical the HVAC in Windows finishes the floor in the Whiting the handicap accessibility 23 different topics within a building this is very much the same as what in 2005 just District had the Ohio school facilities come in and do what they call the facility assessment assessment that was the work of my firm in we wrote the book on assessing Ohio school back in 1998 we altered the assessment process with the high school to cilities Commission so what's really interesting is I get to do this kind of work with I'm an educational plan riding architect and doing this for 30 years anything about it is like I can go in and do an assessment and and really understand the process because I told wrote the book out of him if you will  the state it back in 2005 when you had your assessment done the state had 12 or so a firm's architectural firms in engineering firm doing assessment work the interesting thing about that as most of those assessments throughout the state came through my office for checking and back checking so it was really excited to have sort of a contract with the state be able to do that so one nice thing I very much appreciate the facilities committee and in hiring my firm to do this but we really understand this assessment working Woody Allen still do Assassin's call last with questions in the field and as we move forward  what I wanted to say though India talked about a three phases what is process that we're going through this the very same work as this is the first part of what we call Phase 2  I think one of us just all the data the assessment were the existing building areas and the teaching areas in the learning areas and the cafeteria areas within a building as well assessment cuz Indian said I just want to say it again this is as far as we got we have no idea where this process is going to end up but we know that we got a process put together and we all the parts and pieces in the right place to give that it wouldn't give them the ball hit the right direction if you will  Bishop white again you'll be done to that battery which is the assessment process at this apartment moving into the visioning in the planning process I think you will have a copy of this calendar and again doesn't around engagement meeting number one play because we put together a process for this facility planning whereas we got to the Milestones if you will of community engagement change communication number one I know you got building level or sea level meetings as well we got so that each one of the buildings and I think we for refined of building team last meeting on the calendar that entire process is going to be a process in which which to get to get the back of listening to ideas and thoughts incorporating some of the 21st Century Learning initiatives that you're already doing it some of your classroom and some of your learning areas I'm in and I'm really trying to pull that into where we're headed but again I want to say it again we have no idea where those presents is going to end up when you know if we got good hard fact of what we have in our physical facilities and we have a process but together and that's it if it's going fast okay immediate said we have the facility cash for stood was able to kind of preview our presentation and I really guess what we got from that because believe questions because we're going to get us some real detail stuff here but I don't want to get in the weeds of the detail again we got all that information on the web and say after anybody wants to ask it a question about these facility assessment  again a lot of your play very familiar with one or two t building just not all of him going and enforced sort of the the campus here we're in the sort of the center of the campus when we get the kindergarten have Larson Middle School on and Edison intermediate and a course corrugated North is the high school and then north of that we had the dead lighthouse okay what's the first thing that we do we do what we call this thing in space used diagram and we do this for a couple reasons when you go around and go to this building and understand this building is 135480 square ft that doesn't really tell us much what we need to understand is in the building in cell  where are those teaching and learning areas where are those service areas where are those Corridor or our communication areas within the Ville and we we go this in such a fashion show the end of the software development of coding if you will it keep saying learning space or the library surface area of a residence in organic is is in purple and it's some of the corridor spaces in yellow and we use this as a plan as we move forward so we can take this data and really understand where we got teaching and learning where we got four doors or we have service what is sing we doing this process we go through and look at the building and we we look at the ages of the building the original building and its area and break it up into a Interstellar example that the original building in her Nana has blue portion and then the first edition was just parked in purple tool is simply something that we have this one original construction to the high school in that diagram with that that baby blue color if you will the original High School is built in 1922 and lower than 29215 square feet L why is that important that's important because it again I want to say this with with with pressing saying we don't have any preconceived ideas but let's just imagine that is in this process that we're going through weed Define is it as a group and maybe it'd be best that a certain portion of a certain building may need to be removed because there's additional cost of renovating that play up for it just doesn't work educational that's a big part of this whole planning process and can indocility process such that we can pull never pieces out as well as know what the at the lighting and if this lighting isn't to the level of the the standard that were looking for educationally we need to replace Chatsworth Humphrey Matt or do some Renovations at lady to get it up to that level but that's only if that's what it's all about bringing these facilities, and some of the systems that are fail I know this is the maintenance where I know you are the maintenance staff and son at incredible job keeping these buildings going to be when you talk about a building in her a district an average age of building is 80 years and every one of these buildings is still plugging along that's fantastic I know there's old been a lot done to these buildings as well just to keep them going and it's an incredible staff you got to continue operating these buildings away their observing operate sing when you as well no reason why we looked at that diagramming to see each different addition to the building we look at the pathetic break it down by friends and so does the baby blues and we haven't talked this is me this order of the purple or pink force and we haven't talked to each one of those 23 things are broken down by building or by building area again so just when we look at because I know so did you got to come up with these questions will what's it going to take cost-wise to replace the windows in a 1953 addition on this building was very easy to take in and find that data okay again all of this data and you can get lost in this day all of this day is going to be on and I'd be more than happy to answer any questions about if it with a big crowd like this within the high school and back if I'm in the 1953 and I want to go up and meet you Chattanooga building fairly well to get around in the building and it shouldn't hit that way going to see some five if there's no way for someone to get there I get around to make me look what they called reasonable accommodations to be able to get into the building and that's a level of Hunter's way too and we put it in as Pop to do ramping to the front because every is not as early a wheelchair-accessible but officially  visually impaired person I need to have to go in the front door because that's the greeting and that's the process anybody comes into your building so that's what we look at you have to get into that and get some reception in the front of the high school if you're a visitor you shouldn't happen a grandfather remediation accessibility of some sort but we're not meeting okay within the Assassin itself there's what we call the place and I'm just going to show you one example description of each one of the original building additions menswear think the description about what is what makes us a trooper one of those areas rating of of that weather needs replacement it's okay or he needs some some some work I know right in the nation we look at friends each one of these we have sort of a litmus test with roofs today's worst may be great and I'm not saying they are but today let's just say the 50 greatest we look at this assessment we look forward at least two years and only make sure the room has at least 10 to 12 years lifespan less if it doesn't we put money into replace that group because when you think about a planning project we're going to next year doing planning and then it's going to take a year or two if in fact end up doing something to a building we would probably want to take care of that group in that process so we're to three years out before anything really happens and that's not the if we have to take care of that in one of these each one of the friends it's electrically if it's a 35 40 year old electrical system we plan on replacing because we're starting point where I think you're you mentioned the elevator has some parts and pieces that have to be made that's not a very cost-effective way to run that particular device in adult  how to get I just in Campbell High School the electrical plate again it's all broken down by original building in each each Progressive Edition will it help you have anything of the information like how long it take a ruptured last how long a boiler should last life spans on we have five more years before it died in the descriptions you'll see Skittle talk about what the system is and for instance if it's a hot water boiler system it'll say typically a hot water boiler system should last this long this what you plan on your dismissal so if you want to descriptions it's all in there but again if you got any questions we got some standards we go by you like at week and change we will forward assessment of the Ohio school facilities came in and did an assessment the result of their assessment were was a 2005 24 Brazilian and some change  the assessment that we did in 2016 was 40 for a 44 & a half ton so what does that say that's as a couple things it says that the need isn't getting any less we know things are wearing out as we move forward what's also saying is some of these systems within these buildings have met that sort of litmus pants and although in 2005 maybe the roof was okay in this particular area gets 10 years 11 years later it didn't pass that test so we had to add that so that accounts for some of the bodies as well as sisters being older as well as a little bit of inflation with these move in each one of the system's okay so that's why he had that sag Adam 24 - 44 so are you saying that nothing has been done since 2012 as far as an assessment play Yellow to the no no no what I'm saying is in the same said today this is what it would cost to update buildings we did the same thing 2016 between 2005 and 2016 whole lot has been done through the permit process which short narrow that Gap that Gap would have been much larger had that process done been doing a lot has been done a lot of me yeah yeah and let me preface this by saying all of this assessment done is show us those systems that need need help it's not saying that we need to put  40 4 minute 44 and a half million of these buildings will be will be will be golden that's that's not at all because we don't know what we're going to do these bills we also know address assessment helps because it's been broken down by building addition that let's just pretend on one of these additions we decide I know what we really need to go in and do something with this classroom lighting will they want to go back to the assessment and say well if we're into the classroom lighting perhaps when we have the ceiling we're doing this lady it would make sense to look at a couple other things that they needed help above that sealing a document to go back to to say hey redo lining let's do this and this part of that project so it's a little bit more cost-effective I'm not at all saying that this 44 minute is something we need to do tomorrow this is just a factual Gathering of of where your buildings are with actor line drawings and he will when you're halfway to get passed away in Payson kitchen project cost  and it has to me yeah we got it we got the extra 21 or 22 per cent that fits on each one of these numbers for and when she talks about that when you look at locate Project Source most brilliant plan it's got to have scheduled had to just got to have coffee it's a very important piece of this whole people project we will use the alphabet on this one this was this magic lady and
