place a call to Arms II rear speaker series if you would please make sure you put your devices I like the Michelle Wilson and I know how she is in the garage with she has some family members here at the high school executive director for the Grand Prairie chamber and destination grandview's when you guys go see the Festival Bombshells in charge that she does a lot of work with local businesses here in Grandview to connect them to the community a lot of nonprofit type of work that she's done past 19 bears and I hopefully what you guys can ask her about it she can share with you or things about sales marketing Ewing Ave n and then planning things like that so it takes a lot of turn left when you get things put together and that's what Michelle does and I've been working with her for the past few months to put on this career sure she's one of the people that helped me get this all work sunset together I really appreciate you coming in thanks a lot for the grand High School  I'm going to try to not use good morning can you all hear me where do I find eggs and it doesn't seem like all that long ago but I love them and most of all I love representing this Community with the granny Gary chamber and now destination Grandview and a lot of people don't know Define dissertation okay well Chamber of Commerce in each Community should have a purpose in a bowl of connecting businesses with each other and bringing consumers to those businesses and keeping them thriving keeping the Ellen interview the unique thing about that we have very small businesses the majority of our businesses are 10 employees or less so they taste different challenge has been large corporation and they really really refer on business-to-business support and I'm getting the word out any way that they can and they don't have large marketing budgets so they rely on Chambers of Commerce and and networking additions to keep their business Friday so that's what the Chamber of Commerce we are a non-profit temperature Tucson  okay so my background basically has been in a non-profit industry I worked for experience Columbus and at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium of non profit and non-profit really should have focused promoting that Business Without the bottom line and lots and lots and lots of money so that their focus remains true and pure to what it is that they represent you have to make money to stay in business we make money at the chamber not a time but we make enough to do what we need to do and always drink What's the defin online so we can produce more programs I will pick something up in the last one is here that we did Sims 4 Dead immediately choices his mother who is my best friend in high school and said Michelle's here and she said anipro the festival that we put on is called the dig dig and that's the festival to be put on every June a job that I also Italian in it with you can't go because you're underage so it really didn't sound great to anybody that. They thought I said best and that's all you know it's not anything like that it's just better to promote local up are distilleries micro breweries and wineries but it's a very successful festival and it brings a lot of people play music and it did not help raise the bottom line of the Granby Area Chamber enough that we could bring on a second person and and and help with some of the activities I've been with the chamber since 2009 and I'm the only employee I have the meal employee until just recently and I think Jessica's my Messier moment Jessica Wally I don't know some of you may know this person son Nick but anyway it's been there's a lot to do in a every single day and when I love about things that everyday is different as the only employee I am the  I am the membership salesperson membership retention I'm the event planner and the event coordinator and execute execute all the events phones at come up with new ideas all the time to benefit the members and to mend in the community so it's very busy but that's what keeps it interesting everyday and when I look about it  so I will tell you that after I graduated I went to my spam University for a year as a vocal music Major I then transferred to the Ohio State University as a business in English major and that's what I would have finished in but I started a family I have completed my college degree I do not recommend that one dead I have work very very hard over this those years to connections and to get to know the right people should to be right on that meeting you don't get the job executive director anyone his Nation on there but I will tell you that I recently was asked about a position at Ohio State University and his people called me and because I didn't have a turn off the green. I fit every piece of that job description but I didn't have a college degree so I wasn't even being considered some please do pursue some kind of education and post high school and an help yourself out the speaker series that we are working on here with Miss set Fender is is really it's for everybody whether you're going to college and you know what you want to do or the polar opposite either you don't plan on any I've no idea what you want to do I I had an idea what I wanted to do which was another reason I didn't finish so I wasn't I wasn't sure where I was going at that time but  but I did always Farm in at Nick and great connections to get to where I am today so  some of the things that he want go to to talk about besides the  education where what the Outlook is for this career you know there's there's only so many chambers of Commerce around but what's unique about Grandview is that we're so small that we really functioned at a community organization before the Hotel so we got to Hotel I search the City of Grandview instead of historical experience Columbus they promote the city of Columbus the event tax  and every time you get on Hotel play the price is $99 and night when you check out it's about $117 a night because there's so much tax tacked on to Rivercrest that tax gets used in each area of that City in many areas of that City to promote it and to get people there and spending the night again so Sahalie have this great hotel the Hyatt Place we should do something with the bed tax to come over and you and and so we establish destination of you and that that's allowed us to do it let the chamber really focus on promoting the business community and letting destination review this on bringing visitors into Grandview sure as to our restaurants to the Grandview theater and some of the boutique shopping along Grand and 5th Avenue  so what's the difference in the two organizations is that we have two different audiences  as I mentioned if you do the events did you taste of Greenfield did any of you make it down to taste your crazy last month can you change the format this year and that was Taste of three of you and tailgate we out we look the the event up a month and to have warmer weather which it was a beautiful play Ohio State game so we put a 26 foot screen up and and the OSU game people could just kind of stay right there side of my chest it was a really great that the June did best grade of it for us and I will continue to do that as well so you'll still see those continuing every year and then went destination Grande Regal see some new events coming on like the Tour de Grandview bike race that is something please help out with us as destination Grandview and this year we do the street party that if you if you came at all to the street party or watch the races it was and Afraid fun night and it wasn't a wonderful addition to the event and then we have some new that is coming online so if you ever needs service hours for volunteers came on board with me in June and she's really filled up our social media so on one way with a very small budget in the grand chamber into to Market our self and remembers is to social media very big into Twitter LinkedIn and Facebook because I think you are at all interested it will tell you what's going on in Grandview the businesses are doing what's things that you can go to and support we have a food drive going on currently for heart-to-heart loopy Adria sounds like a first community and then we'll be doing a toy drive in December for Toys for Tots summer always doing something and trying to give back to the community so this is Jessica thank you Jessica for joining us so if you were asked what there is to do interview if you have relatives coming in there like okay we're going to be there today's what can I do while I'm there nothing that's not true there's so much to do we have all kinds of things to do that I didn't realize when I was right I forgot what I was going down here it was like there was tumbleweeds going through it out of there was really nothing to do but there is a lot radio Avenue itself is has a lot of history people come just to to walk the Avenue in from Vergennes ice cream they come candle lab to for their own handle they come to the Grandview theater it has so much history behind it and people come to sit in that theater experience of single-screen Theatres that that's been operating for so many years we have lots of consignment stores which exciting too many of you but it's it's a very cool way to have her people to come and shop and get some some great items at is postum happy mother come just to show more consignment stores certainly are restaurants you have to know the Grandview is known for our restaurants and lots and lots of shows that are not chain restaurants in that you can get to divide every type them that you can possibly be hungry for so there is a lot to do in Grandview what's unique in our marketing is that we are so close to the downtown area downtown so we can take some of this at the downtown area and we can bring them to Grand even when people come in for meetings and conventions often times they bring their spouse and their spouse doesn't have anything to do while they are in their meetings during the day so we'll put them on a bus will bring it to Grandview will show them the architecture the history taken my screen and do all the things that that they can do while they're here and let them know take some great Grandview pieces back window some knowledge and some natural items in that company that around forever the time if you guys are way too young but they were on this to Rogers year and people like that's a cool thing show them that video Mister Rogers came to krema Nut Company and being on the Food Network and so there's lots of ways to tie in Grandview to the National scene and at has certainly just all we do have a lot to offer and we are close to so many things be Ohio State University you are very closely with the university Hospitality District so yeah we can offer people tours at the stadium or either the Press Box to our days like that and give people a really unique experience while they're here so that's to give them a great experience leave them wanting a little bit more telling people about it and I'm coming back and that's from the chamber side and from a destination driving side and it's certainly want to hit this to move here because that increases our tax base and and help the city very closely with the city of Grandview we work very closely with the school system and you know we're very fortunate and gravy that we all were very closely and and well are there any questions Nine West  I think we're doing like marking sales like what you do you know I definitely I would obviously focus on that and your studies and and marketing and PR if you do social media right now that's a great start be careful what you post I know you hear that all the time but that should be careful what you post and then and then really what about things that are person if you read an article that is really pertinent to you know what group that you're involved with then you know that's that's a way to make your mind working in in a mindset of what what can be put back out there to help others achieve the goals that you're trying to achieve I'm trying to take a example if you are since yesterday I got something saying that they're going to shut off their electricity and they won't be able to cook and this is happen and some of the restaurants have completely bitten and he knows scared to death paying thousands of dollars to keep their electric bill on and if it's a scam so I sent that out to all of my restaurants because you know they need to know is that this is from the Attorney General's office this isn't happening and they really need to pay attention to who it is they're talking to because you know anybody can fall into that trap so you know that that would be pertinent to to my members and we represent every industry in the chamber so I can keep my eyes and ears open for virtually everything and what I need to educate after. marketing and marketing and PR no again I think social media I think reading just keep reading and read the news paper stay up on current events and and that will help you every day  you want to have on yours like worst skills read me some of the major skills a person would need for this this career 40oz Lincoln person stop talking and making connections you know  trial attorneys love winning trials I love going to a restaurant somebody new in chatting them up and find out what makes them tick and what their passion figure out how I can  so you know I'm a good example as I was at India Restaurant last week just having lunch and with a friend and inline the buffet and this guy and I start talking and then he has a thing in the Bell review it on my gosh we could go together and I mean I left there like so excited because you know I'm at the store he wants to do for you that's really important to get these people involved so that they do more here and they and then three more here and they find out what's important to Grandview and he said it was going to be retail in the Bob and I said yes and no we don't need any more Apartments although can feel the apartments but you know apartments in retail and so making those connections networking I used to be terrified walking  anywhere by myself I Needed Somebody by my side as my crutch that I can email doesn't I don't like and I know more time that I could never have done this in high school I was in mr. humdingers classes long overtired probably and work here my senior year and he said  how much does a pale white and I couldn't speak in front of people so you know you have to have good social skills you need to be able to speak you need to be able to to call me bull and address problems you know you need to be diplomatic about how you answer this question or College dental in service hours if you go on the paper in bed you know where they're going to be Sophia painting ideas and also play music and you're sort of control leadership can I was a singer and I could sing in front of people can I can speak into this it isn't learned skill if it doesn't come naturally to you but it's so we're taking this advice is to if you give me try something career-wise and if it's not what you dreamed find out what your passion is and and follow it because I'm happy every day I'm happy every day with what I do and that's not terribly pond at people picker they stick with it I will tell you that if you work in a non-profit you're probably going to make a little less money or a lot less money but you have so it's a train off a cliff lift 4in, sometimes it's not always but you know absolutely love it was the toughest job I ever had  because it requires so much of you as a person to be invested in promoting the mission and take hours and hours and hours they never saw my family so I had to make a move when she was a tough decision but find find what makes you happy find your passion and and make it work there's a lot of different things you can get into if you go to college and say who I really want to do human resources there's fun things you could get into compensation and benefits you can get into research you can get in the policy maybe you can be a generalist which me did you do kind of what I do you do a bit of everything you can do all benefits everything you do though in Human Resources requires a lot of governmental reporting and accuracy my background is I'm Only Human Resources but it's also a County  and it really comes in handy any questions so far how I got interested in human resource I like to help I am truly a people person I can go anywhere and talk to anybody  and I think that's in key component of being in I'd like to solve problems and I love love love research I really was born in the wrong era because the books and read and go to the library and find things we can not my thing because Wikipedia is not reliable is put there by people it's not put there by X anybody could put things on Wikipedia face to face but I really love to solve problems  requirements for this job are very that depends on what you want to get into my background initially was accounting I was a controller turn the largest advertising agency in Ohio in Florida and I decided several years ago to switch careers in that position I did a lot of compensation and benefits and I manage all of the benefits for a company but I also started taking fear of the people  and that's what I do best I take care of people I make sure their benefits are right I make sure that their families are taking by making sure that  do you know if they call in sick and they call me and say hey I'm having trouble getting them prescription what sound and I'm taking care of that for them it's what I do best you can get vacations in a chart human resources  pH chart  how many, Global PHR how many people here are there if all heard of Nike right Adidas Converse  PayPal the United States human resource people are spread throughout the globe but they are p are responsible for tens of thousands of people and they travel all the time although they may be US citizen they may live in Denmark Sweden Germany France Can wild that sounds appealing you may not be home  the one weekend a month or two weekends a month  sounds like fun to travel initially but it gets but it may be something you want to do it's a great way to start out your career and see the world you can be a senior professional HR that's what I am I'm a senior professional HR you have to go through testing you have to go through six months of training get your certifications some people have to take the test 2 or 3 times Star music test studying for the CPA exam and it's difficult but it's worth taking some businesses required to have certification before they hire you and that's becoming more and more important to some businesses that you stop that certification some businesses will take experience and certification it just depends list business the stone characters my business they don't care for certified larger companies normally do to have any questions hear what about hiring officials are resources officers who checks social media is that something you do or you know about I know a lot about that true if you have a Facebook page and you are and I'm interviewing you I have a right to ask you new password to Facebook Twitter Instagram you can get me and if you tell me know I have a right to tell you you won't be hired I can check your pages what you put on there will follow you the rest of your life it can keep you get a job  more more if they keep you from getting in college they are looking add looking at your Facebook pages are you holding  are your social are you not social  what are you are your face is full of dark pictures is that what they want I don't want anybody at my work  that is posted negative comments about their previous employer there are people who are fired from their jobs for posting on Twitter or Facebook what has been on there Facebook page they're fired from their jobs because they posted something derogatory about their company in human resources a cheerleader for our company's we are the backbone we are the cheerleaders we are the ones that when people look at us we smile we know everybody by name  we talked to everybody I can tell you every person's name I can tell you your family I can tell you about the kids I know what college their kids went to or if they went to trade school in there now or welder electrician plumber it's knowing your people that keeps us going we'd have less than a two turnover it our organization the average turnover is 14% for coming on we have less than we haven't lost a person now in four and a half years last person  so what's your company says or the owners play for it because that's your job what you do  we don't always great when parents tell us  and it made just tell your friends back  not always because you cheerlead for your family you do the same thing for your job  does have any questions what's on the company I actually have a friend who owns a v a piece if I don't any atheists seen people fired 15 years late patient for something because it turns out they didn't graduate college so there's several things but it's it's dependent upon the company some company  but it's
