didn't really choose my career until a couple years after I graduated from but I had no idea what I want to do after school when I was in college I had no idea what I want to do after college can I that was actually following my girlfriend now my wife can Europe both living in Chicago and she got a job for a year teaching in Switzerland and I was just going to wait and hang out in Chicago until she came back and that about two months before she was supposed to leave I realized I didn't want to wait for her so I scrambled around and try and find if you're up to pick up anywhere in Europe is closer switch tacos  and found a job teaching in a country called Jeff down the Czech Republic and at that time it was about a year after the end of Communism and so say it really tayberry well so my salary was about 70 equivalent of 75 to 100 US dollars per month which if you have get mortgage credit card debt anything like that is really hard to keep up with those debt payments so the teachers that young people right out of college didn't have any kind of debt that they had to be responsible for so that's how I got the job teaching and got to love no teaching experience my degree in college was not an education and so I was really going into this experience kind I've never been to Europe before the only countries in travel to Mexico and Canada so it was quite an experience to readex about 12 months earlier I couldn't have gone to as an American because it was behind the Iron Curtain still kind of control that's how I got into the career and once I started doing it I realized how much I loved it and I was pretty good at it just kind of naturally it didn't require a lot of work and I just kind of found that I what's up  did it for a year there then was able to join my wife at first school in Switzerland taught and coached there for a year then came back and worked on my my Master's Degree and books that are kind of sir waiting for a result of the story that I recorded from an elderly woman who survived this event during World War II life story turn down into my Master's thesis back in the mid-to-late 1990s and  what about the last five years turn down its  with the help of an artist local artist  decided to write anything to dinner  what love about teaching ESL is that I always tell my students this that I by the end of the semester I think that I work as much if not more for my students as they have were burned for me in a class of 20 students that typically have people from 17 different countries 1617 different country the first question I always get when I tell people that I teach people who don't speak English is how many languages Tom and even if I did speak another language very well you wouldn't help me that much in the classroom because maybe one or two ages range anywhere from 18 years old to people in their mid-sixties some of them are right out of high school then have some college experience back holding their own country so they don't some of them left their home countries when they were 10 years old and live for eight years in a refugee camp in tents and get it done and now they're here so there's a there's a real Variety in terms demographics  the requirements if you want to do is a second language at the level that I teach at a college or university you need a master's degree and places like Ohio State Ohio Dominican Day offer master's degree in teaching English as a second language if you want to do it a bra don't need a master's degree necessarily but you do need some kind of draining usually nesl unless you are not too picky about where you there are some places where it's harder to get teachers to go there if it's harder to get teachers to go there then they generally are stringent on that requirements of the universe job outlook how do you say for the position that I have as a full-time ESL instructor at a college University those positions are difficult it in a city the size of Columbus if you go to a larger city with a more Cosmopolitan population like Atlanta Los Angeles ghost jobs are easier to find but part-time jobs that's what a lot of people what state do adjunct instructors wear one or two plastic Columbus State and I get this for 7 or 8 years I got my full-time job I had a class at Franklin University from Capital University  all of those together and it kind of is equivalent the other side of it is if you are somebody who enjoys traveling and enjoy foreign language today I think this is the premiere for you because Josh in other countries are Collectibles is pretty easy to find jobs so whenever I need young people who are interested in foreign languages like I'm sure that's a lot of you are in the Smiths Spanish class or French class if you have a talent with that and you have an interest in foreign languages you have an interest in traveling and living in other countries in my opinion this is the best way to do you can almost teacher like to do that I'm friends with a brand new graduate to play soccer for me and I'm really good friends with her father Olivia mole at she sat in on some of my class to Columbus State she was an undergraduate at Kenya found in her second year teaching English in Ecuador and absolutely loves it  I think that's  Premier Packaging that sounds like you you like language and you like travel and I really recommend this so I would say that's in terms of the second career that I'm here and talk about which is writing and got the looks kind of slow going around oh and if you're interested so I'm going to take these books with me that you're looking at right now but mr. hopefully that said the mr. hacker has will make it into the library play White terms of writing I would say you need to have like I do and that supports  because to be honest unless you are the MV less than 1% writers who are successful enough to be able to support themselves is going to be very difficult so he only way that these books to work on it because of the other guy and I always tell people you want to be later or you want to be an artist the other side of these books then you have to do that if you want to be a writer you have to write and sometimes Rite Aid sucks it's not fun and you got it force yourself to sit down and do it and it will always be other things that are there calling you to do them what's the better on television then that Riders Dunes Ryan to there's always a friend calling you go out to play basketball or soccer  sunny and 70 degrees that's what's better that sit down at that desk and write but if you want to ride if you want to be a writer that's what you have to do you have to do it everyday if you can you have to nighttime everything and same thing is true with art if you want to be an artist you have put the time in to your craft and work on and I had the luxury of having no deadline no time constraint with these books I could do this as quickly or slowly as I want because they were mine and there was no Publishing Company you know giving me a deadline and I had my other job to help support this process so the lot of people don't have that luxury lot of people have deadlines pressure to produce but I did if you are interested in writing or the art side and these books I think that you're sister has my email address funny other girl soccer team has my email address send me an email and if you are a writer who is looking for artist now there are a couple different Comics groups here in Columbus that meat and artists kind of work on their heart Wilder meeting showed Cards Against gestiones kind of trade-ideas and so I have contact with a lot of artists who are always looking for writers have written material if you want to turn into a common orographic, if you are an artist and you don't feel strong in the writing why did I have friends were writers who are always looking for artists and you are one of the rare gifted people who can do both congratulations you're pretty unusual the person who plays strong in our and also feels comfortable doing the writing and vice versa you have a future ahead of you if that's what you want to presume because that's a pretty rare combination but if you ever further and we CO2 photograph of that church through looking at and then the idea is slowly pulling more photograph is there and now we have the two of us pulling out outside the window outside the window you can still see photograph this is the little window and if you're close you can still see that photograph on the wall through the little window and then we pull out to a bird's-eye view so how about the Newtown and once I came up with that idea everything else fell into place  but that was that was really the hardest the story was trying to figure out how I was going to represent a place that no longer existed kind of in the I didn't want to just start with  me and this important right talking that's kind of a boring starts but then coming up getting was the hardest part you have photographs reference what town look like  the way that I found her was through stop by visit in the Memorial Museum of the Town said the town was rebuilt after the war so there is a town in it's it's just one the hill over where Houston  tell me one more Memorial Museum and I wouldn't talk to the curator he gave me the names of the three women who were living in the new version which survived and were still alive and then I sent them letters of introduction and explanation of what I want to do and she was the one she was the only charged  letter and said yes tell me what you would end up meeting three times for a total of like 13 hours stop at talking first time we met I had no idea what to expect and I didn't know if she would be willing to talk or how long you'd be willing to talk and the translator who's there with me to this plane into her check but I wasn't what I was interested in talk for about 90 seconds and she said Okay and then she talked for 4 hours straight and lucky luckily I brought about five hours of percents to record it just in case but I did not expect her to sit and talk non-stop for 4 hours straight about this story in about 20  Fosbury Flop call me so
