if I could ever what is attention please please Ohio National Guard and the army a State University to Iraq Afghanistan Egypt City and in the National Guard mr. Ronald Sargent recently retired from the active army with over 20 years of service he served as a noncommissioned officer as well as a commission. he currently Master Sergeant is the recruiting officer for the Army ROTC program at the Ohio State University please join me in welcoming staff sergeant Thompson and Mister sergeant the graduate high school p****** by doing Gabrielle school for Eastern yeah Friday off of Monday who do iPhone the reason why we came today is obviously too toddler bed about 3 or actions and what we're going to do we're going to add some college options and to ROTC option to that well because the National Guard as a community-based organization our big thing is to laptop you out of college for 4 or 6 years but to help you with college and then to also help transition from lower-level how early fired from job up to a management so we'll get into that here in a few minutes like a speaker said I've been in for over 19 year that's about 19 and a half years been all over the world download the Middle East I did too happy with that sorry about all over the job  reservations then 2005 I switched over to the National Guard which of the park High motivation that's the one we came in my two weeks in summer go reason why I did that because where I want to have a family in a civilian setting back home here in Ohio originally from Northwest Ohio 5 Toledo babe I know where that's at  alright so I'll turn out there in the sticks Casey place cigars that we are a community-based organization right here in Ohio where Ohio is that where the uniform  you guys probably been to the gas station store like that new CD that's what you're doing good there under guard  gracias a couple questions and I'm give me would be really odd since we're here to talk about careers jobs and what not I want to I want to pick your brain a little bit when you think of stops for responsibilities what's the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word Mars  therapist delete search met hands over here like lawyer where to find fighting fighting somebody represent that corner back there when we got weather Titan fight the artillery we do have those things we do have people that do right here in Ohio National Guard like I said it's one week in the month of Summer the last time you seen the tank rolling down to the neighborhood if not all those are in reserve park in the parking lot some of the big huge fence around and do there for emergencies only or if they're called upon to go overseas and support and active duty unit not talk about something some job feels that you might not be aware of we have over 200 200 plus when it comes to Specialty's Barbie Army National Guard alright so we have a huge medical field  ipf 68 whiskey which is a healthcare specialist text we have dental assistant we have doctors nurses we have give me better all types of construction what weather is vertical horizontal geospatial engineering you name it and it's evolved engine Indian people that do it right here in Columbus one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer signal for we have people that work on community change equipment satellite hook you up networks all that stuff people that do that one weekend a month two weeks in summer right here in Columbus and many many more to include those combat. You got to do the fighting and all that stuff so there's not trying to get around that do that but the vast majority of our positions right here in Columbus Ohio for the surrounding towns are non-combat related jobs I just told that the previous group that came in before you guys that we did a list everyday of the positions that are available right here in Columbus and rest of Ohio and we had probably three or four infantry type jobs and about ninety percent 87% of the jobs that were available for all non-combat related jobs all right so yeah that's a stigma turn down the volume with weird Army and it doesn't bother me at all that that's all or most of what people think about when they hear cuz we do do that and that's what that's what we are known for career choices think outside the box a little bit do a little bit of research and there's a job you're interested in I can almost guarantee that one weeks basic requirements to be a part of the National Guard obviously happy 70 years old is Columbus a cat 318 can't have any trouble with the law you can have this please traffic things like that but the military and the National Guard specifically are very picky about who comes in how many years ago I don't want to age myself too much here but I came in and 94 so things have changed a lot since then and things have changed a lot from when my dad came in the back in the late sixties early seventies way back in the day the military used to be one of those things that might have been like a last resort but I can't go get a job or dropped out of high school call Sophia  not like everyone because you don't have a high school diploma if you have any rap sheet whoever you haven't taken care of yourself physically I know it sounds silly but we've had people that get 05 just because they may want to take the physical for the military too much you actually disqualified is crazy so it's definitely a last resort option as far as a career did you keep that in mind it's tough to get into its highly from weather is having a job careers all about career progression right moving up and hopefully getting into a management position someday that's what how about making more money have more responsibilities I love those are all aspirations that you guys should have  top playfully about some of the benefits of some of the sacrifices that's what life is all about  benefits of sacrifices see if the sacrifice your work benefits  she wants a ride what do you think a sacrifice for a downside to military service might be  don't get to be around the family  man places I want to do right now in the other would be risking your life okay bold and beautiful family  word for the majority of you what's the most important that you guys going to do you graduate high school call couch so you think that the possibility of missing some college stop sacrificed downside military service candy and for most people it is one of those things that are kind of a deterrent what's Papa composite the National Guard community-based organization and says we are part time you showing up one week can you leave to complete your training after you graduate high school and your jobs will you come right back home going to be gone for four to six months so I'm not going to say that that's not very long because for some of you what's a long time if you haven't been make room for more than a week or two but once you come right back home hopefully your bedroom has been converted into a man play some Maroon get rolled in college  State Farm to school will pay 100% of it  Ohio State is this one of those schools that will pay 100% of your tuition too and you know we have many many other schools that will pay for it so that's something that you can start thinking about now and how you can incorporate the National Guard as far as a career how you can plan financial aid for going to college that takes a huge burden off maybe not you guys but your parents right cuz parents are the ones that most the time to the one signing the sign the loan paperwork for school or or making the payments so this is something that you want to chat with them with as well and how the National Guard get your education help you with some job training and the job at you pick I know by the way should this be an option for any of you in here you pick your job okay you pick your job before you get that commitments not one of these things where you make the commitment and then we assign you a job you're in control of the whole process  now that we talked a little about that anybody have any questions about the difference between who's your choices any questions whatsoever from the basic National Guard and different jobs we have the fact that we pay for your college  how can you record break that when working towards a management position that you corporate that buy make sure you go to college and rolling through the ROTC program which is going to move you for what I am and enlisted member in the middle of Terry to an officer commissioned officer which is Management's but if you would I miss your sergeant and yes that is my last name how to write I was born with it so I just like I do a commissioned officer I still hold my commission I just retired it so the commission means mental for management so from II say that the Four Star General how do you get there well you have to earn a bachelor's degree why yearning that bachelor's degree in just like if you go to the academy West okay you're taking military classes to become that metal manager that the Army needs you to be right no matter what what's your job you go into and West Point 20,000 people applied to West Point last year and 1500 were accepted ROTC is all over the place is only one Academy West Point and there's 275 of us all across the nation 13 programs just hit Ohio ROTC back that you're not a Cadet 100% of the time 90% of the time your first two years of college you take ROTC as an elective and you're in pause student about 90% of the time so you're learning opportunity in college learn if you like the military or not and then if you like it you can stay okay division is what I wanted to do because I like being in charge I grew up here in Columbus I enlisted at first and I got out once you're already so you got my commission and went back to active duty as an officer my time you had major when I retired at the already paid for my Master's Degree and that imagined to be bites on your major and bites on your one-star general Brigadier you have to have a Ph.D because that's where you worked all right be able to retain information of that level no matter what PhD or Master's might be the end usually like mine was in the emergency preparedness which is related to the military is gorgeous what by branch the waiting in the ROTC is like I said just lazy a signing up for the way I did I was part time in the guard they help me pay for my school I took ROTC I contracted DirecTV CNN my old contract went away with the guard Wednesday commission when I graduate so when you come in you commission and commission I guess we'll confusing it's an appointment from the president of the United States to be middle management so if some of that you never have to redo enjoy the rest of your life you can relinquish it after your initial obligation and he can be a very short career like 3 or 4 years of active for six years of part-time in any state or territory you want to go to or  you know you can be a full career like I because I liked it  there was a very short for I know 20 years for y'all probably seems like a really long time but it's not alright turn in then I get my pension every month  then I go to work I thought it was a lot of getting mission was  got my style if you do want to work in as a managerial levels to be a doctor or a lawyer or a pilot those kind of things those are all commissioned officers and there's a lot of other things commissioned officer can do like work with the state department being a foreign area you can do that you know the Army to bite and does this officers do those kind of things that come out at 3 once you're in your Master's they paid for mine 100% is always a good way to come out that freed and that's not a bad thing first place you should ask yourself just like I asked myself in high school was what all I want to do when I grow up and Military appeal to me I just didn't know about it and start doing your research now if this is something you're interested in because you know it's a subculture until you're in it you don't understand it even then you understand your piece of until you beg for 19 or 20 years so is a lot of fun you think that everything is combat it's not right out of my 25 years I spent how late three years during some of the biggest appointment on the Floyd and a combat environment and even then I wasn't in direct that the whole time I was a military policeman my last appointment I was a  a visor to a 2-star rack General Yadkinville wrecking police in the province of Washington which is about diggers Illinois and my job was to professionalize his Police Department be better forensics how did homicide investigations cop bad guys and so they haven't had anything like that and back in the right since the 6th 1967 it does a lot more to it than what you might think most military installations we go to an active-duty installation right it's just like a huge City everything you need to run Columbus and insulation is going to have like Fort Bragg North Carolina stop plate was going to have doctors now all for me okay Army is the biggest branch has a lot of opportunities we have more people than the other branches combined so that's Air Force Navy can do both okay you can enlist the National Guard do the one weekend a month 2 weeks in the summertime my dad got 28 days out of the month you know your college truly okay and one of those courses that you can take in colleges ROTC how can I you have a little bit of experience in the military and the Army because you've been to basic training and possibly jobs school so now you have that experience but you're also taking some ROTC classes while you're at college okay then what you went you commissioned you take off your rank that you were wearing as an what's the number and you put on the the commission  or you can also go simultaneous membership and you will be at the debt okay you can literally be 19 years old okay and you can wear a Cadet Rank and when you go show up to your weekend drill rather than Becerra mechanic rather than going and taking off wheels off a Humvee and working on break stuff like that is 90 years old our students at Ohio State for example an ROTC program now your Cadet so when you show up that weekend you're getting paid as a sergeant E-5 he also working with officers okay so why while your peers that are also 19 years old they're the ones turned into okay you're working with management so you get that experience by the time you graduate college and get that Commission just got three three and a half really good years of experience before you get that commission was going to help you become a very very good officer mad because once you get commission you can say I've been there done that I know what it's like to start off from the Bob Weir after all which way to pop any questions Ohio National Guard right here Ohio one weekend a month two weeks this summer we all throw the 200 jobs Specialties I will pay 100% of your power where you rolled ROTC programs in advance your career start no questions my format  turn flashlight on does anybody have any family that's in the service or National Guard right now somebody brothers sisters Aunts Uncles Ruidoso like Walmart Berkshires at Burnett's juniors did you guys take this might even be something that talk to your parents about but the National Guard is the only Branch I'll pay a hundred percent of your tuition if you think it's at 9 so that way you guys already have your plan as far as I'm going to pay for college right because next huge difference when you already know your school going to get paid for that way of the financial burdens whatever mean what you want right away knowing that you get 100% of the pay for it today change the mattress that we can make sure you go to the school that you want to right off that  any other questions  thank you guys for your time if you do one of the information or literature Audiology programs cancel up here is lead do since I was probably feels woman so I've been Alaska 7 years of been quite a thrill lots of highs 5 kilos what does the majority of what we do it is traveling on the road which can be you know  exuberant and exhausting same time I wanted to play you a video yeah when we when we reported the new rapper we have to go out and do a bunch of promotional things for it along with you just touring and this thing here was a sort of like line and Studio thing in Chicago on a volume training it was a really fun time like the whole thing is like an hour  and then the guy who interviewed us with was really grade but I want to play the song I'm bored out of he did their offer last record just cuz it's a pretty much basically our mission statement of what we do in our day today and so give it a listen and then you talk about sports. please go shut up fear coastal zone 250 so that's that you guys see all of our Trinkets and lighting and stuff yeah that is a real pain to set up a turn up  so is there anybody here that thinks they might want pursue a career some capacity  yes 1 2 3 4 5 gun do you know what it is if you can maybe like to do anybody navigate to California players a.m. musicals Easter  what is an you want to do yeah do you have any plans to go to college for music  maybe well I went to college for years the first year I went to the tech school for audio engineering  did an engineer show the guys in The Studio C a pretty miserable folk so I am booked on out of there and then I went to Bowling Green State University and auditioned and got the music program and the first the first year that was really great it's like going through sort of the musical boot camp which I read music and stuff as a kid taking piano lessons but first  first year of college as far as all the others. Being forced into do things that you're not very which was really good for me  put in a bath you know that this you're you're for student to focus on you know what it is that you're there to learn how to do and then animos colleges if you're going to study music you got play either In classical or jazz  no both of those are pretty difficult styles of music to make a living in it especially Jazz and I never really had the intention of doing that so for me Stephanie intense learning. I was I was pretty anxious to apply that to what I really like to do and I mean I'm voice played in Hanson  in college I had a man and I was just really excited to get out of here  you know where's my knowledge  climax the real world  so mean I did not I didn't finish school but this is how you I'm not saying that it's great to drop out of college or anything but if you want to be able to forming musician you know of a four-year degree you're going to pay a lot of money for something that you know when you go to you went to audition for anything. A band a Broadway show  Oregon you're not going to ask to see your diploma if you're basically going to have to play there and see if whether you can do or not and that's  that's what that's what will get you the job or not being a job so I mean I music education is is a really really helpful thing but I mean it's not it's not an absolute necessity to to make a living being performer okay I'm here myself as a College Dropout does anybody have any questions about where do you want to go we shot in this town in Maryland at a by forgetting that forget the actual name of the park but it's this Farm in Maryland that they sort of rescued all of these on sort of Life Nursery Rhyme fairytale what would you like things from an amusement park to shut down and they restored on an property and we kind of like we kind of did that Rogue wear as in  we didn't totally have permission to shoot there but we did and it was okay so we got to send music video out of that we have that I was a crib and we had quite a few other locations the one that we really wanted was  like there's multiple in like Fairy Tail Parks if no one seen the video it's the others like two of the giant shoe and the stuff and all that kind of stuff when to do a head one of the abandoned ones it was kind of pretty and you know dilapidated but we couldn't get her mission viejo's you know we waiting Frozen Hans and possibly be on being arrested for trespassing and so we just went with  what's the yes what was your favorite band when you were young  young like how young like getting in the music High School let's see it in high school I like I mean I grew up on the way really sort of all the 90s stuff like I  really love live on play Pearl Jam  Metallica and all the things that were being played on MTV like when I was a kid in Middle School in style nobody here probably remembers women MTV just play music videos all the time video student body probably not  anybody remembers the band Incubus Savor the band that I when I started listening to them Lincoln High School very like the first band that I heard that it was sort of diverse and soap and got me out of my my smaller boxes of you know musical style what's today's  basically every other direction I've been listening for a while but David definitely very helpful to me while I was you're a very very very close-minded young man yes ma'am was the Casper that's good question well I was the beginning of piano lessons young kid 7 years old and stuff and I just had a knack for it was like had my practice regimen we're at a practice for like an hour everyday after school please around the age of 10 or 11 you know I'm starting to like actually become interested in music and rap music in learning any of my favorite like rock tunes on the piano solo naturally gravitated towards guitar and then probably after playing the guitar for a little over driving to my first band we had a few we had a few shows which were you know but I guess it is the moment was  the last day of 8th grade myself and some of my play together we got to play for basically our age grade class and yes  all of your from you all these people that you know and  girls hangover I can tell you that is that was kind of the moment that I was like I think this is what's basically been from the time I was fourteen I really do what I wanted to do and shortly thereafter I'm going to grow up playing on Sports  and then when I got in the high school probably after freshman year I just sort of drop everything else and focused on play music yes or no I was way more nervous when it was about to come on television actually the entire day was really long  going crazy day as if you didn't know the shows on live at state the day that we were on the show they were taking two shows and they always have a pretty really bloated but since we were the first the TV show  45 - 4  so needless to say I had an identity really any sleep before that so are you are limited in our sound check and go back  to the apartment and p.m. give a few hours of sleep before we have to be back for the the rehearsal  and then I'm going to do this just waiting around for  your time to go in and play the song and I mean I definitely probably had a bit of anxiety in the upstairs there were like the dressing rooms are it's all very boudica we had like you  a bunch of you know a bunch of people kept coming up there to say hello to us so I probably I need to make Zion actually going out of play was a lot of fun  you know they give you exactly three and a half minutes to play whatever you're going to play I was probably definitely the fastest three and a half minutes in my life but it was it was it was a blast and then like I said that night we had we had a room rented out at a bar and had a bunch of people there to watch the show when it aired and if that commercial break before who's going to be on Saginaw lyrics  let's go throw up  but it came off came off pretty well and so I was  you're pleasantly relieved Israel I believe we are going to be play at the opening ceremonies of the Hill Antonio race flea medicine August I don't have to look at my calendar  YouTube adorable probably playing at the Newport Music Hall in the fall  I don't I don't know the exact date. you look at it as a lot on the freeze of success then I'm just let me know  Wyoming's financially successful again I mean it isn't it is a long shot  but you know if you're if you're smart about it you can make a fairly decent living playing music but now what I have aspire to do and still warband tortoises like he don't like  baby songwriters and play original music play the meaning  yep it's it's it's a struggle to bring in money ahead I guess there's there's the one there's the one thing and who knows why it happens for some people on why doesn't happen for others I mean you know there's I know bands and guys in bands a really good Vans they write Gray songs but they just for some reason people don't laugh on to it and then there's other bands that I ruined siddur not Zachary demands latch on to it so it's like  if you can if you can develop a fan base that you're on retract it like being successful but that's that's the elusive magical ingredient Adriatic weather in Madeira Beach
