October 21, 2014 was the first day for the Career Speaker Series for the 2014 - 2015 school year. Laura Oldham from Starburst Media spoke about web design, marketing, copywriting, and social media. Kevin Young is from DeVry. He spoke about careers in technology, the process in choosing a college, and choosing careers that fit your personality. The Builders Exchange sent Ashley Rhoades from Pepper Construction and Mac Ware of Ware Construction Consulting to speak to our students about careers in the construction industry. They spoke about the various careers in the construction industry and the various levels of education needed to fit those careers. Careers as carpenters, HVAC, attorneys, architects, as well as many others were discussed to help students see the wide range of careers available in this industry.

Laura Oldham who owns a company called Starbucks Starburst media they do lots of different online marketing things if she's going to talk about exactly what that looks like so please give her a nice menopause and welcomer to Grandview Heights High School my high school graduation I'm a little nervous so please bear with me rather than have a prepared presentation I kind of want to keep it casual this morning because I you guys can ask questions if you have any so please you have any questions feel free to raise your hand I'm happy to answer anything so so what I do for a living which it feels like a lot more than a job because it's really more like 80 to 90 hours a week when a good week then but I'm doing this for about 5 years where I help businesses with their marketing I started out I went to college 4  well I started out as pre-law and I quickly realized I had no interest in that so then I switch to journalism and transferred from Xavier to Ohio University to go to Scripps unfortunately I realized I had no interest in journalism as soon as I was graduating so I moved to Chicago with the intention of kind of figuring it out I was I when I started out bartending while I did very bad jobs during the day to talk try to skills basically so I did sales during the day I did advertising copy writing during the day I ended up working as a marketing director for an internet startup kind of all over the place while I bartended at night and I basically it was like going to college again to learn how to do marketing and so after doing that for a few years I quit everything and I have so many jobs at the given time before when I put everything and I just started doing this and I initially thought I would be a copywriter and social media marketing person but every single person I talked to wanted help with her websites so I have been running a Combi website on the side I was writing performing at Second City at the time and I kind of learned how to do website development then just by trial and error to be honest so I started learning WordPress and now today a large hard my businesses WordPress but my day is split pretty evenly among the three things where I build websites I manage social media for local Princess Anne people all across the country and I offered copywriting services so it's kind of all over the place  and email marketing and all kinds of stuff and how I got interested in this career I just wanted a way to use the skills I have learned since College my background was in writing I liked writing quite a bit and this was a way for me to write basically headlines via social media she's my interested photography and two disconsolate wearing about Technologies well which were all things that interested me as far as what's required for this I would say you want to  if you want to do a job like this very detail-oriented you want to be hardworking you need to be emotionally intelligent meaning he can kind of gauge potential and since their needs and what they want  protectionism I haven't already said that is very important there's not a specific degree I think that you need now they probably offer social media degrees I'm sure they you can do all kinds of great degrees but when I School  a long time ago social media dentist yet so I basically just kind of learn to sign and I would say if you wanted to go to online marketing  probably  there's great paths for that now positives and negatives I am always working which stinks I have to check my phone every the day to see who's tweeting at my Brands who's asking questions on Facebook commenting this 3M all that but I can do it anywhere I can work pretty much anywhere in the world which is awesome I'll be going to Europe in about a month hopefully not working a lot but I can I can work from there that's that's fantastic and I can also Define what I do on a day-to-day basis I can decide who I work but they're good and bad is anyone looking to going into something similar to this what are you going to go into that's awesome I wish I had a better graphic design background because I've been taking classes for the last two years on skillshare and Linda but I would love to taken some of those in college anyone else there's got to be more online marketing people in here I would think okay show me some of your site okay so I pulled up some of the web sites I've recently built I tried to pick a mix both from around here and from some of my clients still in Chicago this is a website I just watched a couple weeks ago these are two high school girls from from Dublin actually and they started a nonprofit to help self-affirmation with a focus on young women they saw a problem where people cut themselves down said bad things and for two negative so they decide to start this nonprofit wake me in it was really cool to work with them they're incredibly driven their High School seniors so around your age and that was really fun to work with them and they have absolutely gorgeous photography so that makes it wonderfully easy to go to website but is an incredibly fun website for me to build  check out if you guys have a chance then here's another website I bill the Grandview Area Chamber of Commerce I'm on the board so I spend a lot of time doing different chambers stuff last time I was in this room was for a chamber lunch and actually but  set these are all WordPress websites there's a lot of flexibility with WordPress if you don't know a lot about website development you can pretty easily here's another Local website I built the website for Destination Grandview as well here's a local musicians website Angela perley and the howlin' moons they travel all over the place now and she is excellent sweetheart and wonderful  this is my friend recently opened a local bakery I built her website and did her branding for her then here's a good friend of mine from Chicago who has an apparel company that focuses on Boston Terriers that was a lot of abilto  but do you have any questions  anyone so how does it work does somebody who once branding how did do they just approach you and say this is my business idea will you create something that'll sound they ask you to come up with the logo or what piece of it do you do picture of a lot of The Branding that happens only when they can't find someone else to do branding so branding would be logo fonts colors that largely done by a graphic designer so I have a pool designers on the woman that does snort monster is one of the designers I work with pretty really she has a background in graphic design but there's all kinds of wonderful people that can do The Branding and how normally works is they'll take care of creating them tell the font on the colors and then they approached me in that I build a website based on that I'm doing this for about 5 years now to be 5 years in April and I've been doing it like I said as a way to kind of use everything I've on through the years I wanted to do something that involved words I love writing but I also love Mac and web development kind of marries the two of them words of it's basically like a long and I also love design so I just kind of fell into something that I thought would put everything together and like I said I started out wake me up in any kind of website development I had no background of that at all but every single person I talk to you about social media wanted help with that as well so there's all kinds of gray tree build websites WordPress it's a great place to start if you want to learn how to build your website great free resources all over the place to teach you  do you work on your own or are you affiliated with a pump I work on my own but recently I've started some bigger agencies have been Outsourcing work to me which is great because opportunity to work with some really big National Brands and it also honestly is kind of easy to have someone else do all the client relationship management I'm so it's a little bit of both but for the most part I work on my own I recently hired someone so I had to help her now which is awesome yes what's the bass company that you work for big companies I work for Outsource through they care agencies if I can definitely say names but there's are some good National restaurants actually an old client of mine from how Chicago's and Michelin restaurant and they're nationally-known I get written about and all kinds of great food Publications another old client of mine was Teddy Long's there what's the Travel Channel all the time because they've hasn't been caught a bacon bomb which is 5 lb of sausage wrapped in bacon worldwide coverage so that's another kind of well-known client but my biggest names would be people that are result of the larger agencies said you were working with Second City and you were making like a website for them or something play two classes at Second City and then performed comedy there but I was also doing a comedy website separately seems like a different life long time ago but Tommy website in Chicago where we got all kinds of Chicago Hustler friends to Second City but I wasn't really website for Second City they do just fine without my help anyone else which called what wired today for this field you know exactly for sure copywriting I'm sure their social media degrees now and I kind of looked into it last night a little bit and it seems like quite a few colleges do offer something I know at Hyvee City where I went they teach you a lot of this stuff I went into I studied magazine journalism and none of this was even on the radar at the time I just hired someone just graduated from Scrubs and she she knows WordPress Drupal she knows all kinds of CMS content Management systems and she's work for Crest and she knows a lot about social media too I think it's all kind of bottled in now with a journalism degree as far as graphic design is a good one to go in web design development third what I do is  kind of all over the place and it's just kind of love myself into it but there's it would play Beat for five different actual degrees that you would want to go into so you end up there retake the percentages of like small independent people like yourself versus the big companies that employ people like you you know I would say it's a hard one yes but I would say more and more there more people like me and the trendy term is to call ourselves solopreneurs but there are a lot of Columbus when I moved here from Chicago couple years ago  I was amazed Columbus as a city Grandview in particular and everyone just Embraces the idea small upstarts small businesses that are very open to the idea of working with someone like me and Chicago I had to fight and fight fight because there are larger established agents whereas here people like oh that's wonderful I like to work local I like to work with small businesses so moving here was the best thing that I could have done for my business Chicago Finance but Columbus is just wonderful for embracing someone like myself and I would say there are quite a few people like me because the larger agencies are tapping on us because we don't have as much overhead we're not paying for a big office for not paying for all these extra things and so we tend to be more affordable in a lot of ways how does somebody find you if they want your services I've been very fortunate where I've been entirely based upon referrals I've never had to advertise I don't even do Facebook or Twitter for myself anymore too much extra time with little return but I've I've been very very lucky since I got started where I've a constituent clients and frequently and turning people away which is why I partially say hi to one another negative this job there is not maternity leave so I heard someone in the hope that she can kind of take over in a few months but but yeah Christian questions and we have any questions you think picking your brain here what are you what would you say is the best method for advertising right now Twitter or Facebook or what's the hottest thing going on what's on the client I don't know if you guys even use Facebook anymore do any of you guys use Facebook  Facebook for old Crown still good side safer for Brands Facebook is a good place to be for younger folks and I'm not to the point yet where I have to do a lot of advertise it's the younger folks but I'd say probably Vine and Snapchat to lesser extent Instagram what would you guys say line where do you guys find your most advertisements on buying or Twitter or Instagram  Pandora Canada question why are you so there's Lewis time would like me to take your sheets your career sheets then fill those in there's something model of what it is in your city is it keeps the rain off of your head keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer well maybe not cool if I got married in Summer School to visit main idea  but they provide light for you to see your studies cuz I know you're so intent about making sure you get good that's right Central you are and they provide water for you when he even drink and they provide that same water when it's like down the toilet we have to go to the bathroom Ben and so forth so the block walls in acting with talking about somebody a Mason had to lay those black walls out you think about all the construction is going on around central Ohio not only had Ohio State but all over the place Rose and buildings I guess said there's lots of lots of lots of jobs when you think of construction do you only think of the guys when you living at the field because a lot I want to think that that's all they think about they don't necessarily think about guys like myself that worked in the office for years and years and years and years yes I spend some time out trying to stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer but I as I progressed in my career I moved into the office and was able to work in the office those poor scorpion field in the winter time I was sitting in my office waiting times more like actually does that fits in the office workers but there are guys that work out there all the time on this orange sheet for the things that you have if you have kind of a listing of what it is that people do not ever construction is necessarily holiday there are many jobs and many of those jobs are very well paid ratifying satisfying jobs convert Mason the carpenter in the referendum those are all very well paying jobs that are available to you or called skilled trades typical you got to go to us apprenticeship program or get with a company that's willing to train you as to how to make it cuz you don't just learn how to play those locks up and they're nice and level wall first day right it takes a little time just like anything else you have to learn the skill the plumber that gives in he didn't become a plumber overnight he had to go through an apprenticeship program so there's a training involved in all these things Michigan guys make they make great money the construction industry in the US the sky's the limit there are many strange people that have started in the trains sorry being a carpenter or plumber or electrician and then started their own company  and I'm done very well does one become a business owner so they can do that if you decided you want to go to college there's lots of opportunity so whenever exactly we talked about a moment ago when he got done designing this thing I'm a mechanical engineer so my trade would be to try to what is it going at your supposed to be and how to get that water to the toilet and how to get the black water on the toilet and water flush down a drain out of going to the sewer system where is it go when that leaves this building when you flush the toilet  I'm sorry the sewer it does go it goes through this or but it ends up somewhere it doesn't really go to The Rivers sewage plant south of town ever driven by south of town on the east side of 71 or you driving out is called the southerly wastewater treatment so that black water has got human waste in it go to that plant gets treated we can't just dump it back into the rivers. They might have done that 200 years ago but we can't do that today right he will not allow that it we shouldn't if I just got environmentally friendly so we can leave that water all this being done to the city right now 24 ft diameter think about that  a big tunnel that's going under the city of Columbus right now it starts at the North End of downtown and ends up South downtown it is going to be not the she's not going to run opening there that'll just a couple pipes with the sewer that's a sewage runs him and he'll take it eventually take it to the wastewater treatment plant the water that you drink anybody know take a guess I think about where's the water come from in the water that you use to wash your hands that this young man's father who's a plumber he puts water pipe  from the river or Wells  the three water treatment plants in Columbus a couple of them bring water just one over here by the main post office is not very far from here called the Dublin Road Water Treatment Plant if you probably go by there due to walk Riverside Drive to see that great day right now it's going under are you on vacation because the water supply we need more water OverWatch so that water comes out of the river and is treated they put some chemicals in it that allow bacteria and the particulars on the stuff that's floating in the water but you can't hardly see the collective coagulate drop to the bottom and it clarifies the water then they send it out in time takes about 24 hours for the water to go through that plant and then they make it out in all these underground pipes this way it ends up here or in your home when you turn on the spicket when you turn on the faucet you actually get to clean great right well that's river water but it's been clean so I say anything rain were used to it what about Chris electricity come from or electricity come from Monica Potter hoverboard Call Me Maybe you guys in 5 minutes where they have the turbines down there and they're going to wring my baby right my gas or pulled right in there some discussion I'm sure you guys are working on nuclear power plants and Somebody's gotta creative somebody's Benefield if you do that work for construction firms and design firms there are lawyers and accountants  Ashley when people come to Ashley's they want they want to get mired in one of either be an office worker or healdsburger to them come to actually and what's the process of becoming a worker if you're from turn it up  you got engineer and got construction management and a lot of OSU graph you are forever we do General Contracting so I can be in an engineering position or destruction Amusement looking for degrees for those positions but said we found a lot of skills skilled trade in our firm till we got people out there swinging the **** right he's got to go out there with the sauce pouring concrete up so they have time for trade school or be altered to apprenticeship in are ready so we do Hands-On training with no entry level Paris I got 3 text messages last year in our office because you just don't about all the positions you know we're talking about engineer designers Architects back then check you don't think about the other positions well I think human resources nothing to do with going going but I got to get the people in our firm  marketing love you my computer  I know everybody is virtual design Technologies and dancing like crazy so we thought kinds of machines little do crazy stuff headlines on OSU former French Open Champion literally in the middle of the room in points leader leads in every direction and build us a 3D models in what we can do all things on your computer when you do all the changes in the computer and then we're doing it live in them buildings so we're not having to disturb things we're building so tons of changes going on it's not just about swimming Ray  change it salamanders a lot of at 8 with the idle while you guys have been raised and computers you love working with computers almost everybody in our industry and has a computer in their hand itself one of the guys out on the job site or carrying around tablets or iPads or tablets they said if he's been rolls of drawings that you can probably see me boo text but we're not necessary to carry those anymore repairing their carrying iPads even the details of what is it supposed to be building right on the electronic copy of the iPad somebody's got to put that in so typically that's a cat operator could be ready to design and that's a big piece of what it is is going on today like I said it's a it's a good thing you there is evolving there's lots of opportunities on computers computer work to get all traits in all areas of the business is anybody have an interest going in the construction at this point is anybody have you thought about any of this have you thought about maybe going to college to become a construction person and how for a an architect or engineer designer nobody yet okay well once you have here is kind of education of what might be available to you  Peter Steele trade some of the skilled trades both sides have had some college some of them hats Abbott or in the office work most of those people have some college training at all unnecessary have you grease but most of them do hasn't College crane for you of course we would like to see you go to college and I'm sure your parents wouldn't too would love to see you go to college but that doesn't always work for everybody so there's lots of opportunities for those of you that want to work outside you want to work with your hands can become a carpenter or later or bricklayer you can become the HVAC sheet metal guy morning all this stuff look up here they keeps you warm and handles the equipment takes care of getting the equipment up and running making sure that it works right well I wonder what how those colors got on that wall over there the blue and white I'm thinking the dad's the school colors of this school acapella right I'm sorry sing this the floor that actually hire standing to fall in obviously we wouldn't more there's several different kinds of gym floors available on the market today this happened to the wind also there was some Force left years ago that was putting this down piece-by-piece somebody's got to do that he got paid very well to do that you were going to hear you need what trades out of the field you're going to make a dice living you got it as long as you weren't far show up show when you're supposed to do what you're supposed to do you make a decent living for if you want to take the college that way you have for certainly opportunities there as I said just because you're just going straight doesn't necessarily mean you're not going to be, a business executive many many of our owners and construction companies garden and still crazy I work your way into business ownership if you wish to do that  can a question  any comments 527 what time is over 8:30 any search meeting think backwards I was in a classroom the other day and I usually Wonder small setting to go through and student what you want to be when you grow old right even ask that question cuz he's a little of it play video games with you probably wants to work me I'm taking call Destiny and I got to stuff right not very good but I still do it so  what you want to do on your house answer the phone say what  so what you think about my careers  what do I want to meet  because that's going to determine what y picture it is where you go to college okay so if you think about where would I do somewhere where would I go to find some research and do some Craigslist  Google you guys all have cell phones and if you don't I'm going to give you a website  this paper is yours so I need hugs I can write down on this WSLS the GOP legislators to what do you think they track vintage tickets Labor Statistics what they do is they track what what's the Japanese are what are the Rolling Hills how many jobs are going to be in the next decade what's the average salaries are so you got about 4 different things you're looking at maybe teacher position maybe I want we get to Janice maybe I want to be an engineer go to that website  and do some research and you're going to start your career once you find your career starter Las Vegas  what major will allow me to pursue that career I can just want to talk to you on the phone picture of an FBI agent don't call me I'm here we wait for you think your agents no they hire technology  some places may have taken way tomorrow you want to be a Pilot Air Force you haven't meet certain place  find out what your plans are to go to decorate so what about scholarships does anybody in your apply for a scholarship yet raise your hand okay okay so
